Incident Overview

The incident report details a concerning pattern of malfunction involving Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil Warmers. According to the consumer, multiple units used as directed in their home repeatedly overheated during normal operation. This overheating led to household electrical breakers tripping, indicating a significant electrical overload or fault.

Of particular concern, at least one device showed visible melting and heat damage directly at the plug while the liquid oil refill remained partially full. This suggests an internal electrical issue rather than merely an empty refill causing the unit to fail. Despite the visible damage and overheating, the devices reportedly continued to operate, drawing power and posing an ongoing risk. The consumer noted that the oil refills did not fully evaporate as advertised, further suggesting a malfunction in the heating element or control system that allows the device to continue drawing power without properly dispersing the scent.

These incidents were not isolated, occurring repeatedly across more than twenty individual units and multiple refill packs, indicating a potential systemic issue rather than an isolated defect. The consumer explicitly expressed concern about the risk of ignition, property damage, and personal injury due to the damaged devices continuing to function while drawing electrical current.

Safety Concerns

The reported incidents with the Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil Warmers present several serious safety concerns:

  • Fire Hazard: Overheating electrical devices are a primary cause of household fires. The visible melting and heat damage described strongly indicate temperatures capable of igniting nearby flammable materials such as curtains, furniture, or wall finishes.
  • Electrical Hazard and Shock Risk: The tripping of electrical breakers suggests an electrical fault, short circuit, or excessive current draw. Such faults can lead to electrical shock if touched, damage household wiring, or create conditions for an electrical fire. The fact that the device continued operating while damaged prolongs this risk.
  • Property Damage: Beyond the potential for fire, electrical faults can damage the outlet itself, household wiring, and other connected appliances on the same circuit. The melting seen on the plug is direct evidence of material degradation due to excessive heat.
  • Unattended Risk: Plug-in devices are often left operating unattended for extended periods. The continued operation of a damaged, overheating unit, especially when out of sight, dramatically increases the risk of a severe incident before it can be noticed and addressed.
  • Misleading Operation: The report notes that oil remained in the refill while the plug appeared to burn internally and the device continued to operate. This contradicts the intended function and advertised lifespan, indicating a malfunction that prevents safe shutdown or proper heating.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who own Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil Warmers should take these precautions:

  • Immediately Discontinue Use if Suspect: If you observe any signs of overheating, melting, burning smells, smoke, discoloration on the device or outlet, or if your household breakers trip when the unit is in use, immediately unplug the device and discontinue use.
  • Inspect Your Units: Visually inspect all Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil Warmers in your home for any signs of damage, melting, discoloration, or charring, especially around the electrical prongs and plastic casing. Do not use any unit that appears damaged.
  • Unplug When Unattended: As a general safety measure for any plug-in air freshener or warmer, unplug units when you are leaving home or going to sleep.
  • Avoid Damaged Outlets: Ensure the outlets you are using are in good condition and not loose or damaged.
  • Report Incidents: If you experience similar issues with Febreze Plug-In Scented Oil Warmers or any other consumer product, it is crucial to report the incident to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.saferproducts.gov.
  • Contact the Manufacturer: Reach out to The Procter & Gamble Company directly to report your experience and inquire about replacements or refunds.
