Incident Overview

On Saturday evening, May 16, 2026, a 13-year-old boy entered his bathroom to take a shower. After turning on the water and waiting for it to warm up, he stepped into the shower and reached for the handle of the sliding glass shower door to close it. According to his account, as he gripped the handle, the glass shower door suddenly shattered or “exploded” without any prior warning.

The parent immediately heard a very loud crashing sound from the kitchen and rushed downstairs to the bathroom. Upon entering, they discovered shattered tempered glass strewn throughout the shower enclosure, across the bathroom floor, and in the surrounding areas. The son was visibly shaken and had sustained multiple cuts and scratches from the broken glass fragments.

The consumer reported that prior to this incident, the shower door, which had been installed new in approximately 2017 and was in normal household use, had shown no signs of damage, instability, cracking, sticking, or operational issues. The pattern of breakage was described as consistent with a full tempered-glass failure, with the glass breaking into thousands of small, granular fragments. No objects were reported to have struck the glass, and there was no horseplay or unusual force involved; the only contact described was the normal use of the shower door handle.

Following the incident, the consumer researched similar occurrences online and located other reports and complaints involving similar Delta shower doors allegedly shattering unexpectedly during ordinary use. Photos were taken immediately after the incident to document the shattered glass, the remaining shower panel/frame, and the injuries sustained by the child. This event created a significant safety hazard, causing both physical injury and emotional distress.

Safety Concerns

The sudden and unexpected shattering of tempered glass shower doors, as described in this incident, presents several critical safety concerns for consumers:

  • Immediate Dangers: The primary and most immediate danger is the risk of severe lacerations, cuts, and punctures from the rapidly disintegrating glass fragments. As evidenced by the 13-year-old boy’s injuries, these can range from superficial scratches to deeper wounds requiring medical attention. Eye injuries are also a significant concern if glass shards impact the face.
  • Long-Term Risks: Beyond immediate physical injuries, individuals, especially children, can suffer from psychological trauma or emotional distress following such a violent and sudden event. The fear of recurrence or being in an enclosed space can have lasting effects. Physical injuries may also result in scarring.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Anyone using or near the shower at the time of an incident is at risk. Children, the elderly, or individuals with mobility issues may be particularly vulnerable due to slower reaction times or inability to quickly move away from the shattering glass.
  • Property Damage Potential: The widespread dispersal of thousands of glass fragments throughout a bathroom can cause damage to flooring, fixtures, and other personal property, necessitating extensive cleanup and potential repair or replacement costs.

What Consumers Should Do

If you own a Delta Delta SGCC-6272-6mm-U-A shower door or a similar tempered glass shower enclosure, please consider the following:

  • Immediate Steps in Case of Incident:
  • Prioritize Safety: If a shower door shatters, immediately ensure all occupants, especially children, are clear of the area.
  • Assess Injuries: Check for any injuries and seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
  • Document: Take detailed photographs and videos of the shattered glass, any remaining parts of the door, the surrounding area, and any injuries sustained. This documentation is crucial for incident reports and potential claims.
  • Contain the Area: Safely cordon off the bathroom to prevent further injury from glass fragments until professional cleanup can be arranged.
  • How to Check Your Product:
  • Carefully inspect your shower door for any visible signs of damage, such as chips, scratches, or nicks, particularly along the edges and corners, as these can compromise tempered glass integrity.
  • Ensure the door operates smoothly and there are no signs of binding, misalignment, or unusual stress on the glass or frame.
  • Prevention Measures:
  • Avoid striking the shower door with hard objects or applying excessive force during use.
  • Though the consumer in this report stated no prior issues, manufacturers often suggest proper installation is key to prevent stress points. If you have concerns, consider consulting a professional to ensure the door is correctly installed and aligned.
  • Reporting Procedures:
  • Report any incidents involving product failure or injury to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.SaferProducts.gov.
  • Contact the manufacturer, Delta Faucet Company, directly to report the incident and share your experience.

Manufacturer’s Response

As of May 26, 2026, Delta Faucet Company (through its Liberty brand) has provided the following response:

“Liberty has reached out to this consumer to gather more details in order to fully investigate this report. While Liberty regrets that the consumer had this experience, it does not believe the shower doors it sells pose a significant consumer risk, notwithstanding the fact that because they are glass, they may be broken during the course of use.

Tempered glass doors are extremely strong and are commonly used in bathrooms in place of shower curtains. These doors are made to the strict standards of ANSI Z97.1 and CPSC regulations for architectural glass found at 16 CFR part 1201. The tempering process creates stresses on the glass that allow the glass to withstand greater than normal forces on its surface. Tempered glass, although extremely strong, can break if an end or corner is scratched, damaged, or impacted – these types of things can occur when the glass shower door unit is not installed as directed in the instructions provided with the product at the time of sale. It is uncommon for tempered glass to break, but when it happens, the glass does not splinter into jagged shards; rather, it breaks into small granular chunks to minimize risk to nearby people and property.

Liberty takes product safety seriously and encourages all consumers to reach out to share information regarding product performance.”
