Incident Overview
On August 13, 2026, a consumer reported an incident involving Pyrex Snapware Airtight+Leakproof glass containers. After hand washing the containers, two shards of glass were found on a drying towel. One piece of glass was notably large, almost an inch long and about the width of a toothpick.
The consumer noted that they typically wash these containers in a dishwasher, leading to uncertainty about whether glass breakage had occurred unnoticed in the past. While no injuries resulted from this specific incident, the consumer expressed concern that smaller glass pieces could easily be ingested if not detected. The report underscores the potential hidden dangers associated with unexpected glass breakage in kitchenware.
Safety Concerns
The reported incident with Snapware Airtight+Leakproof containers presents several significant safety concerns:
- Immediate Dangers: The presence of glass shards, especially pieces up to an inch long, poses an immediate risk of cuts or lacerations to hands, fingers, or other body parts during washing, handling, or drying. Even small shards can cause painful cuts.
- Long-term Risks: The most alarming risk is the potential ingestion of smaller, less noticeable glass fragments. If glass shards break off into food or remain on surfaces, they could be accidentally consumed. Ingesting glass can lead to severe internal injuries, including cuts to the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, and intestines, potentially causing bleeding, perforations, or blockages requiring emergency medical intervention. The consumer’s concern about potential breakage during previous dishwasher cycles highlights the risk that glass may be fracturing into tiny, undetectable pieces that could contaminate food without the user’s knowledge.
- Who Might Be Affected: Anyone handling or consuming food from these containers is at risk. This includes adults, children, and even pets if food scraps or pieces of the container are accessible. The elderly or individuals with impaired vision might be particularly vulnerable to missing small shards.
- Property Damage Potential: While no other property damage was reported, the incident renders the affected container unsafe for its intended use, effectively damaging the product itself and requiring its disposal.
What Consumers Should Do
Given this incident, consumers who own Pyrex Snapware Airtight+Leakproof containers should take the following precautions:
- Immediately Stop Use: If you observe any chips, cracks, or signs of degradation in your glass containers, discontinue use immediately.
- Careful Inspection: Thoroughly inspect all your Snapware glass containers, especially around the rims, corners, and base, for any signs of chipping, cracking, or weakness before each use and after washing.
- Handle with Care: Always handle glass kitchenware with extreme caution. Avoid sudden temperature changes (e.g., placing a hot dish on a cold, wet surface or adding cold liquid to a hot dish), dropping, or hitting containers against hard surfaces, as these can cause breakage.
- Washing Practices: While this incident occurred during hand washing, be mindful of potential issues regardless of the washing method. If hand washing, use caution and inspect for shards. If using a dishwasher, ensure containers are properly spaced to prevent impact during the cycle and inspect thoroughly afterward.
- Report Incidents: If you experience a similar issue, immediately report it to the manufacturer, World Kitchen, LLC (Corelle Brands), and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at SaferProducts.gov. Provide as much detail as possible, and if safe to do so, retain the product and any shards as evidence.

Manufacturer’s Response
On August 31, 2026, World Kitchen, LLC (Corelle Brands) provided a response to the CPSC report. They stated that the consumer had not reached out to Corelle Brands directly, nor had the glassware been submitted for inspection.
Corelle Brands emphasized that without the opportunity to inspect the product, they could not verify if it was indeed their product or determine the cause of the alleged problem, which could stem from a defect, common misuse, retailer mishandling, or other factors. They noted that often, similar products from other manufacturers are incorrectly identified as Corelle Brands products.
The manufacturer also stated that their glass bakeware is produced in compliance with applicable industry standards, specifically Chapter 24 of the Cookware Manufacturing Association Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware. Corelle Brands suggested that consumer misuse, failure to follow instructions, or retailer mishandling are common causes of glass product failures industry-wide. Examples provided include hitting the glass on hard surfaces, using improper cleaning materials, using on a stovetop, thermal shock from hot dishes on cold/wet surfaces, adding liquid to hot dishes, improper stacking, or use in excessively hot ovens. They believe there is a chance that either retailer or consumer misuse contributed to the alleged failure. Corelle Brands invited the consumer to contact their Consumer Affairs Department for further resolution.
