Incident Overview

On October 3, 2026, an Anker PowerCore 26800 A1277 power bank, purchased new in 2025, caught fire inside a parked vehicle. The power bank was located in the vehicle’s center console and was being used to provide power to a dash camera overnight. The vehicle was unattended at the time of the incident.

The thermal runaway event led to a significant fire within the center console, causing substantial heat and direct fire damage to the console and surrounding materials. Beyond the immediate burn damage, smoke and residue permeated the entire passenger compartment. This created a widespread film and residue on interior surfaces, including upholstery, carpet, headliner, HVAC system, and ventilation ducts.

Due to the nature of the fire and the resulting hazardous material contamination from the smoke and residue, the vehicle’s insurance company declared it a total loss. Attempts to find restoration or hazardous-material cleanup companies capable or willing to adequately remediate the contamination proved unsuccessful, leading to the vehicle being sent to a salvage yard. The power bank was approximately one year old at the time of the incident. The owner has preserved the damaged power bank, photographs of the damage, and proof of purchase from Amazon.

Safety Concerns

This incident highlights several critical safety concerns associated with lithium-ion power banks, particularly regarding thermal runaway events:

  • Immediate Fire Hazard: A thermal runaway event in a lithium-ion battery can rapidly escalate into a high-temperature fire. This poses an immediate danger to occupants if a vehicle or building is occupied, and can quickly spread to combustible materials.
  • Extensive Property Damage: As demonstrated, a power bank fire can cause significant structural and cosmetic damage to vehicles or property. The heat generated can melt plastics and metals, while smoke and soot can extensively damage interiors.
  • Hazardous Material Contamination: Fires involving plastics and electronics, common in power bank incidents, release toxic fumes, soot, and residue. This contamination can be difficult and expensive to remove, potentially rendering property (like a vehicle) unsalvageable due to health concerns and lingering odors.
  • Unattended Charging Risks: Leaving lithium-ion devices to charge or operate unattended, especially in enclosed spaces like vehicles, increases the risk of undetected incidents and allows fires to grow unchecked.
  • Risk to Enclosed Environments: The confined space of a vehicle can exacerbate the effects of a fire, concentrating heat and hazardous fumes, and making comprehensive cleanup extremely challenging.

What Consumers Should Do

If you own an Anker PowerCore 26800 A1277 or any other portable power bank, it’s crucial to prioritize safety:

  • Inspect Your Power Bank: Regularly check your power bank for any signs of damage, swelling, overheating during normal use, or unusual odors. Do not use if any of these symptoms are present.
  • Charge Safely:
  • Always charge power banks on a non-combustible surface, away from flammable materials.
  • Do not charge unattended, especially overnight or in enclosed spaces like vehicles or under pillows.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures. High heat can increase the risk of thermal runaway.
  • Use only the charger and cables provided or recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Proper Storage: Store power banks in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Disposal: If your power bank is damaged or shows signs of malfunction, do not discard it in regular trash. Take it to an authorized battery recycling facility.
  • Report Incidents: If you experience a similar incident involving a power bank or any consumer product, report it immediately to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.saferproducts.gov. This helps authorities identify potential hazards and initiate recalls.
  • Preserve Evidence: In the event of an incident, safely preserve the product and any evidence of damage (e.g., photographs, video) for potential investigation and insurance claims.
