Infant Death Linked to Boppy Newborn Lounger: A Stark Warning About Unsafe Sleep Practices
Brand Name
Boppy
Manufacturer
The Boppy Company LLC
Model Name
Boppy Newborn Lounger
Product Description
The Boppy® Newborn Lounger is a soft, cushioned infant support pillow designed to cradle a baby in a reclined position. The lounger features a rounded square shape with a deep central indentation intended to contour to a newborn’s body. It is covered in a tan/cream fabric printed with words such as “Baby,” “Love you,” “Joy,” “Honey,” and “Smile.”
The product is marketed for use during supervised awake time only and is intended for lounging, interaction, and bottle feeding under adult supervision. It is not designed for sleep and should never be placed in a crib, bassinet, or other sleep environment. The use of the lounger with soft objects like pillows, blankets, or stuffed toys significantly increases the risk of suffocation and positional asphyxia.
Important Safety Note:
As of 2021, the CPSC issued a recall of the Boppy® Newborn Lounger due to multiple infant deaths linked to unsupervised sleep and suffocation risks. It is no longer recommended for sale or use in any setting where a baby may fall asleep.
Case Details
On August 30, 2020, a 4-month-old baby girl was placed to sleep on her back in a crib, resting on a Boppy Newborn Lounger. According to the report, a blanket was used to prop a bottle, and a stuffed unicorn pillow with side arms was positioned at the head of the crib. Hours later, the infant was found unresponsive, face down under the unicorn pillow and blanket—a tragic case of suffocation or positional asphyxia.
This heartbreaking case serves as yet another reminder that no soft objects or positioning devices should be used in an infant’s sleep environment, regardless of intent or supervision level.
Injury Brief
While the Boppy Newborn Lounger was marketed for supervised awake time, many parents mistakenly believe it is safe for naps or overnight sleep. However, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have both strongly warned against this.
The primary risks include:
- Suffocation from soft padding or accessories surrounding the infant’s face
- Positional asphyxia caused by babies slumping or rolling into dangerous positions
- False sense of security leading to unsafe sleep environments in cribs, couches, or beds
Due to these risks, the CPSC issued a nationwide recall of the Boppy Newborn Lounger in 2021 after at least 8 infant deaths were linked to the product.
Retailers
Before its recall, the Boppy Lounger was sold nationwide at major retailers including:
If you still own one of these products, stop using it immediately and consult the CPSC recall page to request a refund or return.
Liability
The manufacturer, The Boppy Company LLC, issued a statement offering condolences and reaffirmed their support for safe sleep guidelines. They emphasized that the lounger was not intended for sleep and that warnings were clearly printed on the product label.
However, at Farzan Law, we believe that foreseeable misuse is no excuse when a product is used in a way that is both common and deadly. The failure to design with misuse in mind, combined with inadequate enforcement of warnings, can make a company liable under product liability and wrongful death laws.
