Incident Overview
On November 10, 2025, a consumer purchased a 4-pack of Sol-Ti Ginger SuperShot Living Beverage 2.1 fl oz bottles from a Walmart Neighborhood Market in North Carolina around 2:00 PM. Later the same day, at approximately 7:30 PM, while the bottles remained unopened in their opened box on a kitchen counter, one bottle spontaneously exploded. The explosion was described as a “loud pop,” resulting in glass fragments flying across the room. The consumer observed and heard the incident from a distance. Following the explosion, it was discovered that the product had an expiration date in September, two months prior to the purchase and incident date, and was positioned at the front of the store shelf.
Safety Concerns
This incident presents several significant safety concerns for consumers:
- Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is the risk of injury from flying glass fragments. An exploding glass bottle can cause severe cuts, lacerations, and puncture wounds to anyone nearby, including adults, children, and pets. Eye injuries are also a serious concern if glass shatters into the face or eyes.
- Explosion Hazard: The spontaneous explosion suggests a build-up of internal pressure within the bottle. This can occur in fermented beverages, especially if they are past their expiration date, due to ongoing microbial activity producing gases. Such pressure can lead to unpredictable and violent ruptures, turning a seemingly innocuous product into a projectile hazard.
- Property Damage: Beyond personal injury, flying glass can cause damage to surrounding property, including counters, walls, appliances, and other household items.
- Contamination Risk: If a bottle explodes, there’s a risk of the product contents spraying and potentially contaminating surfaces, which could lead to hygiene issues depending on the nature of the “living beverage.”
- Risk to Vulnerable Populations: Young children, who may not understand the danger, could be particularly vulnerable if an explosion occurs nearby. Elderly individuals or those with limited mobility might also be less able to react quickly to such an event.
- Expired Product Risk: The fact that the product was expired and still on the shelf, especially at the front, points to potential issues with inventory management at the retail level. Expired food and beverage products can pose health risks beyond just explosions, including spoilage and bacterial growth.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who have purchased Sol-Ti Ginger SuperShot Living Beverage, particularly those who may have purchased it recently, should take the following precautions:
- Check Your Products: Immediately check any Sol-Ti Ginger SuperShot Living Beverage bottles you own for their expiration date. Do not consume or handle any product that is past its expiration date.
- Handle with Extreme Caution: If you possess an expired bottle, handle it with extreme care to avoid agitation. It is recommended to wear protective eyewear and gloves.
- Safe Disposal: Do not simply throw expired or suspected pressurized bottles into the trash, as they could still explode and injure sanitation workers or others. If possible, place the entire unopened bottle gently into a sturdy plastic bag, then into a rigid container, and dispose of it carefully, ideally in an outdoor receptacle away from living areas.
- Avoid Consumption: Do not consume any product from a package where another bottle has exploded or shown signs of pressure, as other bottles may also be compromised.
- Report Incidents:
* To the Manufacturer: Contact SOL-TI, INC. directly to report the incident and provide feedback regarding their product.
* To the Retailer: Inform Walmart Neighborhood Market about the presence of expired products on their shelves to prevent further sales and incidents.
* To Regulatory Authorities: File a report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov or by calling 1-800-638-2772, especially if you experience an explosion or injury. This helps build a database that can lead to recalls or safety alerts.
- Document Everything: If an incident occurs, take photos or videos of the product, the damage, and any injuries. Keep purchase receipts and original packaging.
