Incident Report Number: 20251231-19416-2147325022

Incident Overview

On December 31, 2025, a consumer reported receiving a shipment from Amazon that contained Drano. According to the report, the Drano product was not properly labeled and was leaking from its container within the package. Upon handling the package and its contents, the consumer suffered burns and skin damage due to contact with the leaking chemical. The incident report notes that online reviews suggest this is not an isolated occurrence, with other consumers reportedly experiencing similar issues of leaking Drano products being shipped.

Safety Concerns

The leaking of highly corrosive drain cleaner like Drano poses severe and immediate safety risks, as well as potential long-term hazards:

  • Immediate Dangers: Direct contact with Drano can cause severe chemical burns to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Ingestion or inhalation of fumes can lead to internal damage, respiratory distress, and poisoning. An unlabeled container exacerbates the danger, as individuals may not immediately recognize the hazardous substance they are handling.
  • Long-Term Risks: Chemical burns can result in permanent scarring, nerve damage, and chronic pain. Eye exposure can lead to vision impairment or blindness. Repeated or prolonged exposure to chemical fumes can contribute to respiratory issues.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Anyone handling the package is at risk, including delivery personnel, the recipient, and other members of the household, particularly children and pets who might unknowingly come into contact with the leaked substance.
  • Property Damage Potential: The corrosive nature of Drano can damage other items in the shipment, packaging materials, flooring, furniture, or any surface it contacts, leading to significant property loss.

What Consumers Should Do

If you receive a package that appears to be leaking or smells of chemicals, especially if you suspect it contains a hazardous product like drain cleaner:

  • Immediate Steps to Take: Do NOT handle the package directly. If you have already touched it, immediately wash your hands and any affected skin thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15-20 minutes. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience burns, irritation, or other adverse reactions. Ventilate the area if fumes are present.
  • How to Check if You Own the Affected Product: Visually inspect all incoming packages for signs of leakage, damage, or unusual odors before opening. If a package containing a liquid is unusually warm, bulging, or making hissing sounds, proceed with extreme caution or do not open it.
  • Prevention Measures: Consider the risks of ordering hazardous materials online, as they may not always be handled with the same care or packaging as in-store purchases. Ensure adequate ventilation when handling any cleaning products. Store all hazardous chemicals in their original, clearly labeled containers, out of reach of children and pets.
  • Reporting Procedures: Report any leaking or damaged hazardous product shipments immediately to the retailer (e.g., Amazon) and the manufacturer. Also, report the incident to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at SaferProducts.gov to help prevent future incidents.

Manufacturer’s Response
