March 3, 2026 – A consumer reported a severe allergic reaction, including widespread blisters and swelling, after using Tide Power Pods Oxi Boost Laundry Detergent, leading to an emergency medical visit and disrupting a Thanksgiving family gathering. The consumer also detailed a frustrating and prolonged process when attempting to seek reimbursement from the manufacturer, The Procter & Gamble Company.

Incident Overview
On November 25, 2025, a consumer washed a load of clothing using Tide Power Pods Oxi Boost Laundry Detergent. Shortly after folding the freshly laundered clothes, the consumer developed blisters on their palms. The allergic reaction rapidly escalated, spreading across their entire body by the following day, Thanksgiving, turning into an emergency that forced them to leave their family dinner.
The consumer required an immediate doctor’s visit, an injection, and a week-long course of medication to manage the severe symptoms, which included significant swelling of the eyes and lips, in addition to the widespread rash. Despite the severity, the consumer noted they couldn’t capture photos of the reaction at its peak due to the urgency of seeking medical help.
Following the incident, the consumer contacted Tide, seeking reimbursement for medical expenses totaling less than $100. They reported enduring multiple rounds of questioning via phone calls and an online portal, where they were asked to provide extensive personal medical history, including surgeries and prescriptions, and upload numerous electronic copies of documents and photos of their severe reaction. After submitting all requested information, Tide then sent a physical letter requesting the exact same detailed paper forms and medical history. On January 22, 2026, the consumer received another letter from Tide, vaguely claiming that necessary paperwork was still missing, signed only with a first name and lacking contact information. Feeling that Tide was intentionally delaying the resolution process, the consumer filed a complaint with a regulatory body today asking them to have someone at Tide contact me to see why Tide keeps dragging out this process instead of resolving my complaint.
Safety Concerns
This incident with Tide Power Pods Oxi Boost Laundry Detergent raises several significant safety concerns, particularly regarding skin sensitivity and allergic reactions:
- Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is a severe allergic reaction, characterized by blistering, widespread rash, and potentially dangerous swelling of the face, eyes, and lips. Such reactions can be intensely painful, debilitating, and, if swelling progresses to the airways, life-threatening (anaphylaxis). The incident also caused significant disruption to the consumer’s life, requiring emergency medical attention on a holiday.
- Long-Term Risks: Individuals who experience severe allergic reactions may develop heightened sensitivity to the offending ingredients, leading to future reactions upon re-exposure. Chronic skin irritation, discomfort, and the potential for psychological distress from the traumatic experience and the subsequent challenging claims process are also possible.
- Who Might Be Affected: While the manufacturer states its products are safe when used as directed, some individuals possess personal sensitivities or allergies to specific ingredients (e.g., fragrances, dyes, enzymes, preservatives) commonly found in laundry detergents. Children, individuals with pre-existing skin conditions like eczema or dermatitis, and those with compromised skin barriers may be particularly vulnerable to such reactions.
- Property Damage Potential: This specific incident does not involve property damage, focusing instead on personal injury.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who have experienced similar reactions or are concerned about laundry detergent safety should take the following steps:
- Immediate Steps to Take: If you or someone in your household experiences skin irritation, rashes, blisters, or swelling after contact with laundry detergent or freshly washed clothes, seek medical attention immediately, especially if symptoms are severe or widespread. Discontinue use of the product and keep the product packaging, including any remaining detergent, as potential evidence.
- How to Check for Affected Product: Carefully review the product name and packaging of your laundry detergent. Compare it with the product mentioned in this incident report: Tide Power Pods Oxi Boost Laundry Detergent.
- Prevention Measures:
- Always read product labels carefully, especially the ingredient list, if you have known allergies or sensitivities.
- Consider using “free and clear” or hypoallergenic detergent formulations, which typically omit common irritants like dyes and fragrances.
- Perform a patch test (applying a small amount of diluted product to a discreet area of skin) if you are trying a new detergent and have a history of sensitivities.
- Use gloves when handling laundry detergent, especially concentrated forms like pods, to minimize direct skin contact.
- Ensure that clothes are thoroughly rinsed during the wash cycle to remove detergent residues.
- Reporting Procedures: If you experience an adverse reaction to a consumer product, report it to the manufacturer directly. Additionally, file an incident report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov, as these reports are vital for identifying potential hazards and ensuring product safety.
