Incident Overview

On August 1, 2026, a consumer was charging their Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max at home. The phone, which was not in a case, was resting on the consumer’s leg. According to the report, the device became “extremely hot, very quickly,” resulting in a burn injury to the consumer’s leg. The consumer has photographic documentation of the injury.

This incident was not isolated. The consumer reported noticing the phone running unusually hot during charging for approximately two months prior to this specific event. Additionally, in the weeks leading up to the burn incident, the phone had reportedly become extremely slow and was freezing frequently.

The consumer contacted Apple Support on the same day as the burn incident and was directed to schedule an appointment at the Apple Store, Lincoln Park, Chicago, IL, for a Genius Bar evaluation. The earliest available appointment was August 8, 2026. During this appointment, the consumer detailed the overheating, the burn injury, and the device’s performance issues (slowness and freezing). The Apple staff member who ran diagnostics reportedly stated that the performance issues were “most likely related to the overheating” and indicated the device needed further technical testing. The consumer was asked to leave the device and returned to drop it off on August 16, 2026.

However, on August 19, 2026, the consumer was informed that Apple’s technicians declined to take the device in for further testing and that it was ready for pickup. Upon calling for follow-up, a store manager stated that diagnostics found “no issue with the phone related to the overheating” and would not address the incident. When asked about a quoted $699 repair, the consumer was told it would only cover a cracked screen, an issue reportedly unrelated to the overheating and burn incident.

Safety Concerns

The reported incident with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max raises significant safety concerns regarding thermal management in electronic devices, particularly smartphones.

  • Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is thermal burn injury, as experienced by the consumer in this report. Extreme heat can cause first-degree to third-degree burns depending on temperature and duration of contact. Beyond skin contact, internal components can be damaged, potentially leading to device malfunction or failure.
  • Long-Term Risks: Persistent or recurrent overheating, even if not immediately causing burns, can degrade internal components, including the battery, over time. This degradation can lead to reduced battery life, decreased device performance, and in rare but severe cases, could increase the risk of battery swelling, fire, or explosion.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Any user of the affected product could be at risk, especially if charging the device on soft surfaces like bedding, furniture, or in direct contact with their body. Children, the elderly, or individuals with reduced sensation could be particularly vulnerable to burn injuries as they may not react quickly enough to discomfort.
  • Property Damage Potential: An extremely hot device, if left unattended on flammable materials (e.g., fabric, wood, paper), poses a risk of scorching, melting, or even igniting these materials, leading to property damage.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who own an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max or any electronic device should prioritize safety regarding charging and heat management.

  • Immediate Steps to Take: If your iPhone or any electronic device feels unusually hot to the touch, especially during charging or intensive use:
  • Immediately discontinue use and unplug the charging cable.
  • Move the device to a hard, non-flammable surface, away from any combustible materials or skin contact.
  • Allow the device to cool down completely before attempting further use.
  • If the device exhibits signs of swelling, emits smoke, or continues to overheat, treat it as a potential fire hazard and evacuate the area.
  • How to Check if You Own the Affected Product: Confirm your device model is an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. This information is typically found in the device’s settings under “About” or on its original packaging.
  • Prevention Measures:
  • Charge Safely: Always charge your phone on a hard, flat, non-flammable surface (like a desk or table) that allows for adequate ventilation. Avoid charging on beds, couches, or under pillows.
  • Avoid Direct Body Contact: Do not leave a charging phone directly on your body (e.g., lap, chest, stomach) for extended periods.
  • Use Genuine Accessories: Always use Apple-certified charging cables and power adapters. Third-party accessories, if not properly certified, can sometimes contribute to overheating.
  • Monitor for Signs: Pay attention to any unusual heat, slowness, freezing, or error messages from your device. These can be early indicators of a problem.
  • Software Updates: Keep your device’s operating system updated, as software updates often include optimizations for power management and thermal regulation.
  • Reporting Procedures: If you experience overheating, a burn injury, or any other safety concern with your Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max:
  • Contact Apple Support directly to report the incident. Keep detailed records of all communications, incident numbers, and dates.
  • File a report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov. Your report helps identify trends and potential widespread safety issues.

Manufacturer’s Response

In this specific incident, the manufacturer, Apple Inc., was contacted by the consumer. While Apple Support initially directed the consumer to a Genius Bar appointment for evaluation, subsequent interactions did not result in a resolution regarding the reported overheating and burn injury. According to the consumer, Apple technicians ultimately declined further testing, and the store manager stated that diagnostics found no issue related to overheating. A $699 repair quote was offered, but it was reportedly only for a cracked screen, an issue unrelated to the reported overheating and burn.
