Incident Overview

On September 30, 2026, just over a month after its purchase on August 21, 2026, a new 2026 Can-Am BRP Outlander 850 ATV encountered a severe safety incident. The consumer reported that while operating the ATV downhill on a dirt road in rural Nevada, the foot brake suddenly ceased to function. The brake pedal traveled completely to its stop without producing any noticeable braking effect or reduction in vehicle speed. Fortunately, the hand brake remained functional, allowing the rider to safely bring the ATV to a stop.

Following the initial failure, the rider conducted a visual inspection but observed no immediate brake fluid leakage or other obvious problems. After confirming the hand brake’s functionality, they cautiously resumed riding. Unexpectedly, the foot brake soon regained pressure and began functioning normally again.

However, the situation escalated later that day. While applying the foot brake to stop at the top of another dirt road, the rider heard a loud pop emanating from the rear brake area. Simultaneously, flames were observed shooting through the right rear wheel area. The rider promptly moved the ATV to the center of the dirt road, away from surrounding vegetation, at which point the flames self-extinguished. Upon closer inspection, it was discovered that the factory-crimped rear brake-line connection at the rear caliper had separated, leading to the discharge of brake fluid and the ensuing fire. The hand brake remained operational, allowing the consumer to return to camp without using the rear foot brake.

The consumer reported that there were no prior warnings, such as a brake warning light or check-engine light, displayed on the ATV before either the temporary brake loss or the brake line separation and fire incident.

Safety Concerns

This incident reveals critical safety concerns related to the Can-Am BRP Outlander 850’s braking system, posing severe risks to riders, passengers, and the environment.

  • Immediate Dangers:
  • Loss of Control and Collision: A sudden, complete loss of foot brake function, especially while traveling downhill, creates an immediate and extreme risk of losing control, leading to potential collisions with terrain, objects, or other vehicles. This could result in severe injuries, including fractures, head trauma, and fatalities.
  • Fire Hazard: The subsequent separation of a brake line connection, accompanied by flames, presents a direct and immediate fire hazard. Given that the incident occurred in dry rural terrain, there was a significant risk of igniting a brush fire, endangering wildlife, property, and potentially human lives beyond the immediate incident.
  • Injuries from Fire: Direct exposure to flames could cause severe burns to the rider or anyone in close proximity.
  • Long-Term Risks:
  • Unpredictable Braking: The intermittent nature of the brake failure (loss, then restoration of function) is particularly dangerous as it undermines rider confidence and predictability, making the ATV inherently unsafe to operate.
  • Environmental Damage: The potential for brush fires could lead to widespread environmental devastation, loss of natural habitats, and air quality issues.
  • Property Damage: Beyond the ATV itself, an uncontrolled fire could damage surrounding property or vehicles.
  • Who Might Be Affected:
  • ATV Riders and Passengers: Are at direct risk of injury or death due to loss of control, collision, or fire.
  • Other Trail Users: Could be involved in a collision if an ATV loses braking function.
  • Emergency Responders: May be called to address ATV accidents or wildfires resulting from such failures.
  • Property Owners: Near recreational trails are at risk from brush fires.
  • Property Damage Potential: The ATV sustained damage from the brake fluid discharge and fire. More broadly, an uncontrolled fire could destroy vegetation, other vehicles, or structures.

What Consumers Should Do

Owners of Can-Am BRP Outlander 850 ATVs, particularly the 2026 model year, should be aware of this reported incident and take proactive safety measures.

  • Immediate Steps to Take:
  • If you experience any unusual brake performance, including spongy pedal feel, loss of pedal pressure, unusual noises, or visible fluid leaks, stop operating the ATV immediately.
  • Do not attempt to ride the ATV if you suspect a braking system malfunction.
  • Contact your authorized Can-Am BRP dealer or the manufacturer directly to report the issue and arrange for inspection and repair.
  • How to Check if They Own the Affected Product:
  • Check your ATV’s model year and make. This incident specifically involved a 2026 Can-Am BRP Outlander 850.
  • Be vigilant for any warning signs, even if no dashboard warning lights are illuminated.
  • Prevention Measures:
  • Regularly inspect your ATV’s braking system for any signs of wear, damage, or leaks, especially around brake lines and calipers.
  • Always perform a pre-ride inspection of your ATV, including checking brake function, before heading out.
  • If you detect any issues, no matter how minor, have them professionally inspected and addressed immediately.
  • Reporting Procedures:
  • If you have experienced a similar incident or suspect a defect with your Can-Am BRP Outlander 850 braking system, report it to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov. Your report helps identify patterns and prompt recalls.

Manufacturer’s Response
