Incident Overview
On January 4, 2026, the consumer purchased a “Big Berkey scratch and dent unit,” along with a stand and a stainless-steel spigot, from USABerkeyFilters.com. Two days later, on January 6, 2026, a pair of Berkey Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filter Elements were ordered. By January 26, 2026, all components had arrived and the system was assembled according to instructions and online videos. After completing setup, filter priming, dye testing, and unit flushing, the consumer noted an “overbearing metal taste” in the water, specifically tasting of iron.
Upon contacting Berkey for advice, the consumer was instructed to dismantle, re-prime, re-dye test, and re-flush the filters. While the water taste improved somewhat, the metallic taste persisted. The consumer, who suffers from arthritis in their back and shoulders, also noted difficulty filling the unit when placed on a kitchen countertop due to its height, a problem partially alleviated by moving it to a bar stool.
On January 29, 2026, the consumer began drinking from the system. After filling a water bottle three times, they experienced acute symptoms including problems breathing, chest tightness, and an increased heart rate. Recognizing that the only change to their routine was the consumption of water from the Berkey unit, the consumer conducted an internet search regarding Berkey filters and allergic reactions. The search revealed numerous complaints dating back to 2013 on various platforms, including Amazon, [REDACTED], and personal health blogs, detailing similar allergic reactions such as skin rashes and breathing problems, all linked to the alleged release of nickel from Berkey filters.
The consumer reported the medical event to Berkey on January 30, 2026, requesting a shipping label and refund.
Safety Concerns
This incident highlights several significant safety concerns for consumers:
- Acute Allergic Reactions: The most immediate and severe danger is the potential for acute allergic reactions, particularly for individuals with nickel sensitivities. Symptoms such as breathing problems, chest tightness, and elevated heart rate can be life-threatening and require immediate medical attention.
- Undisclosed Allergens: The core of the concern lies in the allegation that the filters release nickel, a known allergen, without clear disclosure to consumers. Many individuals may not be aware of a nickel allergy until exposed, making such an oversight particularly dangerous.
- Widespread and Long-Term Health Issues: The consumer’s research indicates that similar complaints of allergic reactions and other health issues linked to Berkey filters and nickel release have been reported by numerous individuals over several years. This suggests a potentially widespread and persistent issue that could lead to chronic health problems for affected users.
- Vulnerable Populations: Individuals with existing sensitivities or compromised health conditions may be at higher risk for severe reactions. The report also touches on ergonomic challenges for elderly users or those with mobility issues, making the product less accessible.
What Consumers Should Do
If you own a Berkey Gravity Fed Water Filter System, especially with the Berkey Phoenix Gravity New Millennium Edition Filter Elements, and have experienced similar symptoms:
- Discontinue Use Immediately: If you experience any allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, chest tightness, skin rashes, or unusual metallic taste after drinking water from your Berkey system, stop using the product immediately.
- Seek Medical Attention: Consult a healthcare professional without delay for any adverse health symptoms you suspect are related to the water filter.
- Check for Nickel Sensitivity: If you are unsure about a nickel allergy, discuss testing with your doctor.
- Report Incidents: File a detailed incident report with appropriate consumer safety authorities, such as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) if in the United States. Also, report your experience directly to the manufacturer.
- Retain Documentation: Keep all purchase receipts, communication with the manufacturer, and medical records related to the incident.
- Consider Alternatives: Research alternative water filtration systems that clearly disclose all materials used in their filters and provide third-party testing results for potential allergen release.
Manufacturer’s Response
When contacted by the consumer regarding the medical event and return request, USA Berkey Filters acknowledged the consumer’s experience but cited their return policy. They stated that the “Scratch & Dent system is sold as is and is not eligible for return.” For the filters, spigot, and stand, they informed the consumer that these items, once water has passed through them, fall under their “50% return policy” for used items. The manufacturer also stated that they do not provide return labels, requiring the customer to bear the cost and responsibility of shipping used items back for a partial refund. Their response did not acknowledge responsibility for the alleged medical event or the claims of nickel release.
