Rit All-Purpose Dye is a concentrated fabric dye solution used to color natural and synthetic fibers. Packaged in a white plastic bottle measuring approximately 5.66″ x 2.43″ x 2.09″, it is sold in a liquid form and available in a variety of colors.

Case Details

On October 8, 2024, a 27-year-old man accidentally ingested a bottle of Rit clothing dye that had been purchased from Walmart just one day prior. Within hours, he began experiencing severe vomiting and uncontrolled bowel movements.

After contacting poison control, the family was advised to monitor symptoms and keep him hydrated. But his condition worsened rapidly. He was rushed to the Emergency Room, where doctors discovered that the ingested dye had caused internal injuries.

Despite medical intervention, the victim’s condition deteriorated. He was declared brain dead seven days later, and life support was withdrawn on October 12, 2024.

Injury Brief

While Rit dye is not meant for ingestion, its availability in small, non-secure bottles and lack of prominent warning labels may fail to prevent accidental misuse—especially in households with children, vulnerable adults, or individuals with cognitive challenges.

Key safety concerns include:

  • Lack of child-resistant packaging
  • Potential chemical toxicity if swallowed
  • Insufficient consumer education on safe handling and storage
  • Minimal label warnings visible on small packaging

These gaps make it reasonably foreseeable that ingestion could occur, especially when the product is stored or used near food preparation areas or handled without proper caution.

Retailers

Rit clothing dye is widely available at national retailers, including:

If you use this product, store it out of reach of children and never transfer it to unmarked or food-grade containers.

  • Design packaging that deters ingestion or misuse
  • Include clear, bold, and multilingual safety warnings
