Incident Overview

On August 2, 2026, a fire ignited within the enclosed chamber of a 3D printer during a laser cutting operation at a consumer’s home in Oak Park, Illinois. Installed within this chamber was a FEROSTICKER F01 automatic fire extinguisher, model number K180-5, which had been purchased new from Amazon.com just ten days prior, on July 23, 2026.

The consumer reported that the device was installed precisely according to the manufacturer’s published guidance: secured by its supplied adhesive to a clean, flat surface at the top of the enclosed area, positioned above the fire risk area, with its discharge nozzle unobstructed and no modifications made to the unit. The chamber volume of 2.99 cubic feet fell within the F01’s rated coverage capacity of 3.53 cubic feet.

The manufacturer’s instruction leaflet specifies activation at 170°C +/- 10°C “or open flame.” The consumer, who was present in the room during the entire operation, directly observed open flames making physical contact with the FEROSTICKER housing. However, the device did not activate, no aerosol or suppressant was discharged, and the unit remains in an undischarged state.

The fire was manually extinguished by the consumer, and thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.

The 3D printer was a total loss. Interior components including linear guide rails, timing belts, cable chain, and the exhaust assembly were destroyed by molten material, and the upper chamber structure is deformed. The underside of a separate AMS filament unit resting on top of the printer also melted, in a zone over the chamber exhaust exit.

This product is sold and marketed for unattended protection of enclosed equipment, including 3D printers that commonly run overnight. Had the consumer not been present, the fire would have continued without suppression. The device, its mounting, and the damaged equipment are preserved uncleaned and available for inspection.

Safety Concerns

The failure of the FEROSTICKER F01 automatic fire extinguisher to activate during an active fire presents several critical safety concerns:

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who own a FEROSTICKER F01 automatic fire extinguisher (model K180-5) or similar products marketed for enclosed equipment fire suppression should take immediate action:

  • Cease Reliance for Unattended Use: Do not rely on the FEROSTICKER F01 or similar automatic fire suppression systems for unattended operation of enclosed equipment. Always supervise equipment that poses a fire risk.
