Incident Overview
The consumer received delivery of a Frigidaire Oven Range model FCRG3062AS from Home Depot on February 5, 2026. The appliance was installed after 48 hours later. Following the installation, the consumer ran the oven for the manufacturer’s recommended time to rid the oven of odors from a new appliance.
Between February 8, 2026, and February 12, 2026, the oven was used several times for baking. During these uses, the consumer observed a distinct natural gas odor emanating from the oven. This odor was particularly noticeable after the oven had preheated and when the burner was lighting to keep the temperature at the setting input on the control console.
Safety Concerns
The detection of a natural gas odor from an appliance is a serious safety concern and should never be ignored. Natural gas is highly flammable and potentially explosive, posing significant hazards to individuals and property.
- Immediate Dangers: The most immediate and severe dangers include the risk of fire and explosion. A buildup of natural gas in an enclosed space, combined with an ignition source (even a small spark from a light switch or another appliance), can lead to catastrophic explosions. Inhalation of high concentrations of natural gas can also lead to oxygen displacement, causing dizziness, nausea, and in extreme cases, asphyxiation. Incomplete combustion, often indicated by gas odors, can also produce carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas.
- Long-Term Risks: Prolonged or repeated exposure to even low levels of natural gas can cause headaches, fatigue, and other health issues. If the leak results in incomplete combustion, the continuous emission of carbon monoxide can lead to chronic poisoning, resulting in long-term neurological and cardiovascular problems.
- Who Might Be Affected: All occupants within the home are at risk. Infants, young children, the elderly, individuals with respiratory conditions, and pets are particularly vulnerable to the effects of gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Property Damage Potential: A gas explosion can cause severe structural damage to a home, leading to extensive property loss, injury, or fatality. Even a gas-related fire, if not an explosion, can cause significant damage to the appliance, kitchen, and surrounding property.
What Consumers Should Do
If you own a Frigidaire FCRG3062AS oven range or any gas appliance and detect a natural gas odor, take immediate action:
- Evacuate Immediately: If you smell gas, leave your home immediately. Do NOT use light switches, phones, computers, or any electrical appliances, and do NOT operate garage door openers, as these can create a spark.
- Do Not Attempt to Locate the Source: Do not try to find the source of the leak yourself or attempt to turn off the gas supply.
- Call for Help: Once you are safely away from your home, call your local gas company’s emergency number and 911 (or your local emergency services).
- Ventilate: If safe to do so before evacuating, open windows and doors to help disperse the gas.
- Identify Your Product: Check the model number of your Frigidaire oven range to determine if it is the FCRG3062AS model. The model number is typically located on a label around the door frame, on the side of the drawer, or on the back of the appliance.
- Contact Manufacturer/Retailer: After ensuring immediate safety, contact Electrolux (the manufacturer) or Home Depot (the retailer) to report the issue and inquire about inspection, repair, or replacement options.
- Report the Incident: Consider reporting the incident to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov.
Manufacturer’s Response
The manufacturer, ELECTROLUX/WHITE CONSOLIDATED, has acknowledged the incident report.
