Keurig K-Supreme SMART Brewer Catches Fire, Manufacturer Cites Tampering

September 16, 2026

September 15, 2026 — A Keurig K-Supreme SMART Single Serve Coffee Maker reportedly caught fire in a consumer’s home, filling their kitchen with smoke and requiring the unit to be carried outside and extinguished with water. The manufacturer, Keurig, Incorporated, investigated the returned unit and concluded that the brewer had been previously opened and modified, with a critical safety component – the thermal fuse – repositioned from its original factory location.

Incident Overview

On the morning of Friday, August 21, 2026, a consumer attempted to make a cup of hot water using their Keurig® K-Supreme® SMART Single Serve Coffee Maker, purchased in 2022. Immediately upon activation, heavy smoke began pouring out of the bottom dispense area of the unit, rapidly filling the kitchen. The consumer quickly unplugged the machine and safely carried it outside to their driveway. However, the smoke continued to accelerate, and visible flames took hold inside the main housing of the brewer. The consumer had to use multiple pitchers of water to fully extinguish the fire and stop the smoke. Fortunately, there was no structural damage to the home, although a strong burning plastic smell lingered indoors.

Prior to the formal incident report, the consumer had contacted Keurig’s customer service, where they were reportedly informed the unit was out of warranty and offered a discount on a new machine, which the consumer found insulting given the severity of the incident. The consumer requested a replacement unit and for the damaged brewer to be returned for engineering analysis.

Safety Concerns

This incident highlights several significant safety concerns, particularly regarding thermal failures in household appliances and the critical risks associated with product modifications:

  • Fire Hazard: The primary and most immediate danger is the risk of fire. A thermal failure, especially one involving visible flames, can quickly escalate, causing extensive property damage, structural damage to homes, and potentially leading to serious injuries or fatalities.
  • Smoke Inhalation: The rapid production of heavy smoke filled the kitchen, posing a significant risk of smoke inhalation, which can cause respiratory damage, poisoning, and even death.
  • Rapid Escalation: The incident demonstrates how quickly an appliance malfunction can turn into a severe fire hazard. The flames took hold inside the housing shortly after smoke appeared, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
  • Property Damage Potential: While no structural damage occurred in this specific incident, the potential for extensive property damage is very high with appliance fires, including damage to countertops, cabinets, walls, and surrounding items.
  • Impact of Product Modification: The manufacturer’s findings that the thermal fuse was repositioned are critical. Safety features like thermal fuses are designed to prevent overheating and fires. Any modification to an appliance, especially to its internal components or safety mechanisms, can compromise its intended safety design, rendering it dangerously unprotected against thermal runaway or other failures. This significantly increases the risk of fire and electrical hazards, affecting anyone in the vicinity.

What Consumers Should Do

  • In Case of an Appliance Fire: If an appliance emits smoke or shows signs of fire, immediately unplug it if safe to do so. If the fire persists or spreads, evacuate everyone from the area and call emergency services (911 in the U.S.). Do not attempt to extinguish an electrical fire with water unless you are certain the power supply is completely cut off, as water can conduct electricity and cause electrocution.
  • Avoid Product Modifications: It is crucial never to open, alter, or modify the internal components of any electrical appliance. Such actions can disable safety features, void warranties, and create severe hazards including fire, electric shock, and other malfunctions. Always use products as intended by the manufacturer.
  • Report Malfunctions: If your appliance exhibits unusual behavior (smoke, burning smell, strange noises, overheating), immediately discontinue use, unplug it, and contact the manufacturer’s customer service or a qualified repair technician.
  • Check for Recalls: Regularly check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website (cpsc.gov) for any recalls related to your household appliances.
  • Manufacturer Contact: If you experience any issues or wish to report an incident with a Keurig brewer, contact their Customer Care Center at 866-901-2739 or visit support.keurig.com.

Manufacturer’s Response

Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. provided a response on September 15, 2026, stating that they take every potential safety concern with their brewers very seriously. They confirmed that they spoke with the consumer and replaced the affected Keurig® K-Supreme® SMART Single Serve Coffee Maker with a new Keurig® K-Duo® Gen 2 Coffee Maker. The damaged K-Supreme SMART brewer was returned to Keurig for evaluation.

During their investigation, Keurig determined that the brewer had been “previously opened and modified.” Their analysis specifically found that “The thermal fuse that provides overheating protection had been repositioned from the original factory location. This prevented it from operating as it was designed to, which means that it could not shut power off to the water heater in the event of an overheat condition.” Keurig stated they do not have information regarding when the brewer was modified after its initial sale, but emphasized that “the brewer was not designed or built in the condition in which it was returned to us.”

Keurig also affirmed that their appliance products comply with all applicable codes, including UL-1082, to ensure design and construction meet or exceed industry safety standards. They encourage customers to contact their Customer Care Center for any issues or to report an incident.
