September 14, 2026 — An incident report details multiple Kidde 30CUA10-V smoke and carbon monoxide alarms repeatedly sounding false fire alerts during the night. Incident Overview

In May 2025, a consumer purchased four Kidde 30CUA10-V smoke/CO alarms. Since then, three of the four units have experienced repeated false alarms, announcing a “fire” in the middle of the night. The consumer reported that these were not low battery chirps, but full fire alerts. Due to very high ceilings, the homeowner found it unsafe and impractical to climb a 15-foot ladder in the dark to address the alarms. This resulted in the alarms being taken down or knocked down, leaving the household without functioning smoke alarms for long durations. Although Kidde replaced one of the alarms free of charge, the consumer expressed concerns that the product itself may be faulty by design, given the recurring nature of the false alarms across multiple units.

Safety Concerns

The repeated false alarming of critical safety devices like smoke and carbon monoxide detectors presents a range of significant safety concerns:

  • Immediate Dangers: False alarms, particularly when occurring in the middle of the night, can cause panic, disrupt sleep, and create significant distress for occupants, especially children, the elderly, or those with underlying health conditions. The consumer’s description of needing to remove the alarms from high ceilings also introduces a risk of falls or injury while attempting to silence or disable a constantly blaring device in the dark.
  • Long-Term Risks: A primary concern is the phenomenon of “alarm fatigue” or complacency. If alarms frequently trigger without an actual threat, occupants may begin to ignore them or, as in this incident, disable them altogether. This dramatically increases the risk that a real fire or carbon monoxide leak will go undetected, leading to potential injury, severe property damage, or fatalities. Living for “a long time without a smoke alarm” directly exposes the residents to these severe, unmonitored hazards.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Homeowners and residents who have purchased the Kidde 30CUA10-V model are potentially affected. Those with high ceilings or limited mobility may face particular challenges in maintaining or addressing alarms if they malfunction, as highlighted by the incident report. Any household relying on these alarms for early warning of fire or CO is at risk if the devices are removed or become untrusted.
  • Property Damage Potential: While the false alarms themselves do not cause property damage, the subsequent removal or disabling of the alarms leaves a home vulnerable. Should a genuine fire or CO leak occur while the alarms are non-functional, the lack of early detection could lead to extensive property destruction and complete loss, far exceeding what would happen with a properly functioning safety system.

What Consumers Should Do

If you own a Kidde 30CUA10-V smoke/CO alarm and experience similar issues, here are steps you should consider:

  • Immediate Steps: If your alarm sounds a fire or CO alert, always assume it’s real first. Follow your home’s emergency plan. If you have verified there is no actual fire or CO leak, try to silence the alarm according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If nuisance alarms persist, and you decide to remove the alarm, do so safely. However, immediately replace it with a working smoke/CO alarm (even if it’s a temporary battery-operated unit) to maintain essential home safety.
  • How to Check if They Own the Affected Product: Locate your Kidde smoke/CO alarms and check the model number, which is typically found on the back or side of the unit. Look for “30CUA10-V.”
  • Prevention Measures: The manufacturer suggests that dust, debris, and improper placement can cause nuisance alarms. Regularly clean your smoke/CO alarms by gently vacuuming around the vents with a soft brush attachment, following the instructions in your user manual. Ensure alarms are installed in appropriate locations, away from cooking fumes, excessive humidity (like bathrooms), and air vents, fans, or drafts that could blow particles into the sensing chamber, as per the user guide. Test your alarms monthly and replace batteries as recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Reporting Procedures: If you are experiencing repeated false alarms or any other safety concerns with your Kidde 30CUA10-V alarm or any consumer product, it is crucial to report the incident. You can report directly to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov. Additionally, contact UTC Fire & Security (Kidde) customer service to report the issue and seek their guidance or a potential replacement.

Manufacturer’s Response

UTC Fire & Security, manufacturer of Kidde products, responded to the incident report, stating that they take residential fire safety very seriously and that all their products comply with rigorous Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards for performance and reliability, specifically UL 217.

They acknowledged that nuisance alarms are a rare but possible occurrence, attributing them to numerous potential causes unrelated to a product defect or an unsafe product. Kidde highlighted their history of selling millions of units to satisfied customers over decades. Their analysis of returned units, they stated, invariably finds dust and debris in the sensing chamber, which they suggest can lead to nuisance alarms, even when customers claim thorough cleaning. They also emphasized that alarms must be cleaned thoroughly and regularly, and placed away from vents and fans, in accordance with user manual instructions, as improper maintenance or placement are often the cause of such false alarms.

Kidde maintains that their voluminous data on this product shows it is safe and works as intended, fully compliant with UL 217. They noted the customer’s high ceilings make regular alarm maintenance difficult. While Kidde replaced the customer’s alarms, and the new alarms reportedly function without incident, the manufacturer pointed to dust accumulation as the likely reason for the initial alarms sounding. Kidde encourages the customer to maintain their alarms regularly as per the user guide.
