Kwikset SmartCode 917 Keypad Lock Fails to Open, Posing Egress Risk

September 8, 2026

September 4, 2026 — A Kwikset SmartCode 917 keypad door lock reportedly failed, becoming inoperable from both the inside and outside, raising serious concerns about emergency egress. The incident highlights potential safety hazards for consumers relying on smart locks for home security and access.

Incident Overview

The consumer reported that their Kwikset SmartCode 917 keypad door lock, installed on an entry door for several years, suddenly ceased to function. Despite repeated attempts, the handle could not be operated from either the interior or exterior of the house. This unexpected failure directly contradicts the product’s advertised emergency egress function, which is designed to allow the inside handle to open the door regardless of its locked status. The consumer emphasized the extreme danger posed by such a malfunction, especially in scenarios like a fire where swift exit is critical. Although a warranty replacement was provided a week later, the consumer expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of urgency from support, stressing the potentially deadly consequences of an inoperable exit.

Safety Concerns

The reported incident with the Kwikset SmartCode 917 lock presents significant safety concerns for homeowners:

  • Immediate Dangers: The primary and most severe risk is entrapment within the home, especially during an emergency such as a fire, carbon monoxide leak, or medical crisis. If the door cannot be opened, occupants, including children, the elderly, or those with mobility impairments, could be trapped inside, leading to serious injury or fatality. Panic and disorientation in such situations can further exacerbate the danger.
  • Long-Term Risks: While this appears to be an isolated incident based on the manufacturer’s initial review, similar failures could recur in other units over time, leading to a false sense of security for consumers who believe their smart locks offer reliable emergency egress.
  • Who Might Be Affected: All occupants of a home equipped with this lock are at risk. In an emergency, every second counts, and a malfunctioning lock can turn a minor incident into a life-threatening one. First responders may also face delays in gaining entry if external access is also compromised.
  • Property Damage Potential: In an urgent situation where escape is necessary, occupants might resort to forceful methods to open the door, potentially causing significant damage to the door, frame, or the lock itself, in addition to the primary safety risks.

What Consumers Should Do

Given the potential for serious safety hazards, consumers who own a Kwikset SmartCode 917 lock or similar products should take immediate action:

  • Immediate Steps: If you experience any difficulty operating your Kwikset SmartCode 917 lock from either side, do not delay. Immediately identify and utilize an alternative exit. Consider temporarily disabling or replacing the affected lock with a standard, reliable lock until the issue is fully understood and resolved.
  • Check Your Product: Verify if you own a Kwikset SmartCode 917 lock by checking the product model number, typically found on the interior side of the lock mechanism or in the product manual.
  • Prevention Measures: Regularly test all your home’s entry and exit locks to ensure they operate smoothly and reliably, especially the emergency egress function from the inside. Ensure all household members are familiar with how to operate all locks and are aware of alternative escape routes in case of an emergency.
  • Reporting Procedures: If you experience a similar lock failure or any safety concern with a consumer product, report it immediately to the manufacturer. Additionally, file an incident report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.SaferProducts.gov. Detailed reports help identify potential patterns and trigger investigations.

Manufacturer’s Response

On August 31, 2026, ASSA ABLOY Americas Residential Inc., the manufacturer of Kwikset products, provided a response regarding the incident. They stated that they take all reports concerning potential egress or access issues very seriously and appreciate the consumer bringing this experience to their attention.

The manufacturer indicated that upon reviewing available consumer feedback and service call records related to the Kwikset SmartCode 917 lever and similar products, they did not identify a pattern of similar incidents or other egress issue reports. They affirmed that the product is tested and certified to all operational, cycle, strength, and security tests according to BHMA A156.2 standards and and is listed as Grade 2.

ASSA ABLOY Americas Residential Inc. confirmed that their records show the consumer contacted their support team and was provided with a warranty replacement. They also stated that they remain committed to the quality and safety of their products and have reached back out to the consumer to obtain the original unit for further evaluation to better understand the reported issue. The company concluded by stating they will continue to monitor feedback of this nature to confirm their products perform as intended.
