February 20, 2026 — A NEON GAMING LIGHT purchased from Amazon.com has been identified as a significant safety hazard after a consumer reported the product getting hot, exposing wires, and shocking a 7-year-old child. The incident highlights concerns about product quality, deceptive appearance, and manufacturer/seller accountability for consumer safety.
Product Details
Product: NEON GAMING LIGHT
Incident Overview
The consumer purchased the NEON GAMING LIGHT from Amazon.com in November, intending it as a Christmas gift for their 7-year-old son. Upon arrival, the product was packaged in a thin brown rectangular box and, to the consumer, appeared to be made from glass bulbs, leading to careful handling.
On Christmas Day, the son received the gift and placed it on his dresser. The light, designed as a hanging decor item, included a metal chain for installation. When first plugged in using a USB connection (no plug-in adapter was supplied), the light reportedly became hot instantly, which the consumer initially attributed to the USB plug used rather than the product itself due to its thin wires. The product was subsequently unplugged.
Days later, while tidying the son’s room, the consumer picked up the light and discovered that what appeared to be glass bulbs was actually a rubber-like white tubing that had become detached from the light. This revealed “tiny scrunched up little wires” inside. The son then informed his mother that he had been shocked by the light and cautioned her to be careful when plugging it in.
Further inspection revealed that the wires plugging into the product were thin, exposed, and lacked proper covering. The white adjuster on the cord was made from “very cheap plastic,” and there was no product information provided anywhere on the item. The consumer concluded that the product was “very cheaply made” and a “hazard” that “could have caused a fire” in the child’s bedroom, despite its initially deceptive “good” appearance. The light also reportedly flickers.
Attempts to contact the seller, ACTYL, on January 18th/19th received no response to multiple messages detailing the fire hazard. The consumer also reported the seller and product to Amazon numerous times without direct response from the seller. On January 21st, after contacting Amazon Chat customer service, an Amazon agent urged the seller to provide a full refund. Approximately two hours later, the seller requested photos, stating they would not help without them. The consumer supplied the photos, along with screenshots of the Amazon agent’s instructions for a full refund. However, the seller reportedly “straight refused to even respond” to this proof and has not issued a refund or resolution for the $32.99 product.
Safety Concerns
This incident highlights multiple severe safety concerns, posing immediate and long-term risks to consumers, particularly children:
- Electric Shock Hazard: The direct report of a 7-year-old child being shocked, combined with exposed, “scrunched up” internal wires and thin, uncovered external wires, indicates a clear and present danger of electric shock. This can lead to burns, cardiac arrest, or other serious injuries.
- Fire Hazard: The product reportedly became “instantly hot” upon plugging in. The use of “thin wires” and “rubber-like white tubing” – a plastic substance that the consumer noted “could melt” – creates a significant fire risk. Overheating electrical components, especially with poor insulation and cheap materials, can easily ignite nearby combustible materials, potentially leading to a devastating house fire.
- Poor Construction and Material Quality: The description of the product as “very cheaply made,” with rubber-like tubing, thin and exposed wires, and a cheap plastic adjuster, suggests a severe lack of quality control and adherence to safety standards. Such shoddy construction increases the likelihood of product malfunction and breakdown over time.
- Deceptive Appearance: The product’s initial appearance, leading the consumer to believe it was made of more robust glass bulbs, is deceptive. This can lead consumers to underestimate potential risks and handle the product less cautiously than its actual construction warrants.
- Lack of Product Information: The absence of any product information on the item itself is a critical safety failure. Consumers are deprived of essential details such as wattage, voltage, safety certifications, or manufacturer contact information, which are crucial for safe use and troubleshooting.
- Child Safety Risk: Given that the product was purchased for a 7-year-old child and placed in a child’s bedroom, the risks of electric shock and fire are particularly alarming. Children may not recognize the dangers of exposed wires or overheating, putting them at higher risk of serious injury or death.
- Property Damage Potential: A fire caused by an electrical defect in this product could result in extensive damage to property, including the child’s room and potentially the entire home.
What Consumers Should Do
If you own a NEON GAMING LIGHT from Manufacturer CULOIS, or a similar LED gaming light purchased from Amazon.com (especially from seller ACTYL), please take the following actions:
- Immediately Discontinue Use: Unplug the product from any power source and stop using it. Do not attempt to repair it.
- Inspect Your Product: Carefully examine the product for signs of damage, such as exposed or frayed wires, melted plastic, or if the product gets unusually hot during use.
- Report the Incident: If you have experienced any similar issues, report the incident immediately to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov.
- Contact the Retailer: Reach out to Amazon.com customer service with your concerns, providing details of your purchase and the incident.
- Consider Safe Disposal: Once the incident has been reported, dispose of the product safely to prevent others from using it. Check local regulations for electronic waste disposal.
Manufacturer’s Response
The Manufacturer, CULOIS, provided a one-word response of “Yes” when contacted regarding the incident report, offering no further details or explanation at this time. The seller, ACTYL, reportedly refused to issue a refund or provide resolution after the incident was reported and evidence supplied.
