June 16, 2026 — An NXR-PRO 48-inch professional-style gas range, manufactured by Duro Corporation, has been taken out of service by a homeowner after the discovery of charred internal wiring, raising significant fire hazard concerns. The incident report highlights a potential documented fire-hazard safety defect consistent with the unit’s history of erratic performance and previous burn incidents reported to the CPSC involving NXR/Duro gas ranges.

Incident Overview
In February 2018, a consumer purchased an NXR-PRO 48-inch professional-style gas range from Costco. The unit was installed in their single-family home, where they are the owner and operator. For several years, the range exhibited concerning behavior, including unpredictable burner temperature spikes and excessive, inconsistent oven heating, which on occasion caused minor first-degree burns to the user during normal cooking activities. No medical treatment was required for these minor burns.
In May 2026, while attempting to locate the unit’s serial-number plate, which was not visible from any exterior surface, the homeowner removed the front trim piece of the range. Upon doing so, they discovered charred, burnt internal wiring inside the unit. The damage was located at the point where the wiring passes through into the burner assembly area. Evidence of heat damage included burnt discoloration on the braided wiring sleeve, heat-darkened edges of the metal cavity opening, and signs of sustained heat exposure on surrounding metal surfaces. The consumer documented these findings with photographs.
Considering the discovery of charred wiring on a gas appliance, the homeowner immediately deemed the unit a fire hazard and took it out of service by shutting off the gas at the wall valve and disconnecting the electrical supply. The household has been without a working range since this discovery. The manufacturer (NXR / Duro Corporation) was given written notice with photographs and declined to assess the safety condition, responding only that the unit was outside its 2-year warranty and that the consumer should hire a technician at their own expense. The retailer (Costco) then closed the matter on that same warranty basis, without the safety diagnosis its own representative had said was the necessary next step.
Safety Concerns
The reported incident with the NXR-PRO 48 gas range presents several serious safety concerns:
- Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is the potential for fire. Charred wiring, especially in proximity to gas lines and high-heat burner assemblies, indicates a severe risk of ignition. Electrical faults, such as arc faults or short circuits caused by degraded wiring, could ignite gas leaks, accumulated grease, or surrounding combustible materials within the appliance or the home. Damaged wiring also poses a risk of electrical shock to anyone touching the appliance or its components, particularly during use or maintenance. The consumer’s report of prior minor first-degree burns due to unpredictable burner temperature spikes and excessive oven heating aligns with the potential for systemic temperature control issues, leading to immediate burn risks.
- Long-Term Risks: Continued use of an appliance with charred wiring and erratic performance significantly increases the long-term risk of a major fire or electrical failure. The CPSC’s own database reportedly shows prior incidents involving NXR/Duro gas ranges, including igniters that fail to shut off and release gas, electrical sparking inside the oven cavity, and runaway temperatures, indicating potential systemic, long-term hazards.
- Who Might Be Affected: The consumer, household members, and anyone in the vicinity of the appliance are at risk. Unpredictable temperatures can lead to serious burns for users, and vulnerable individuals like children are particularly susceptible, as evidenced by a one-year-old child who received a third-degree burn from an NXR oven and a consumer whose clothing caught fire on the cooktop, as reported to the CPSC.
- Property Damage Potential: A fire originating from the range, fueled by either gas or electrical faults, could quickly spread, leading to extensive damage to the kitchen and the entire home, posing a significant threat to personal property.
What Consumers Should Do
If you own an NXR-PRO 48 gas range or any NXR/Duro gas range and have experienced similar issues or have concerns:
- Immediately Investigate (Safely): If you suspect internal damage or experience erratic performance, burning smells, or unusual sounds from your range, it is crucial to take immediate action.
- Shut Off Utilities: If you observe or suspect a fire hazard, immediately shut off the gas supply to the range at the wall valve and disconnect the electrical power by unplugging the unit or turning off the circuit breaker.
- Do NOT Attempt Self-Repair: Do not attempt to open the unit or perform repairs yourself, as this can be dangerous and may exacerbate the problem.
- Professional Inspection: Contact a qualified appliance technician to inspect the unit for any potential defects or hazards.
- Document Everything: Take photographs or videos of any damage or unusual conditions. Keep records of purchase, installation, and any communications with the manufacturer or retailer.
- Report to CPSC: Report any incidents, suspected defects, or unsafe conditions with your product to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at SaferProducts.gov. Your report helps the CPSC identify patterns and take action to protect consumers.
- Be Aware of Warning Signs: Pay attention to any unusual smells (like burning plastic or gas), sparks, smoke, inconsistent temperatures, or error codes from your appliance.
Manufacturer’s Response
On June 12, 2026, Duro Corporation, through its national counsel, Fowler Law Group, responded to the consumer’s complaint. Duro Corporation acknowledged the complaint regarding the NXR-PRO range purchased on February 28, 2018.
Duro Corporation stated that the complaint and remedies sought by the consumer arose after the expiration of the two-year limited warranty period. They maintained that Duro does not provide free warranty parts and service after the warranty expires. Furthermore, Duro claimed to have no record of the consumer contacting the company with complaints prior to this incident, despite the consumer’s report of issues since the first year of use.
Regarding the “charred burnt internal wiring,” Duro Corporation stated that they reviewed the photograph provided by the consumer and concluded that “the discoloration seen on the wiring is not burn damage.” Instead, they asserted that “the discoloration of the wiring is normal heat discoloration from the normal use of the gas range and is not safety hazard.” In view of these points, Duro Corporation considers the matter closed.
