Oster Pro Series Blender Detachment Causes Severe Hand Lacerations, Requires Emergency Treatment

August 26, 2026

August 21, 2026 — A serious incident involving an Oster Pro Series Blender has led to severe hand injuries requiring emergency medical treatment. Incident Overview

On the morning of Wednesday, July 29, the user was preparing a smoothie using the individual-sized blending cup attachment of their Oster Pro Series Blender. The user reported assembling the blender by attaching the blade assembly to the cup and then securing the cup to the blender base, following normal operating procedures. The “Smoothie” preset was selected, and the Start button was pressed.

Shortly after the blender began operating, it reportedly started vibrating and shaking violently, moving across the countertop. The user immediately reached toward the blender to turn it off. At this moment, the blending cup suddenly detached from the blender base and was propelled across the room along with its contents. The rotating blades were exposed, and the user’s fingers came into contact with them, resulting in deep lacerations.

The user was transported to the emergency room, where the injuries required stitches. Treating providers have advised that physical therapy will likely be necessary after the stitches are removed to help restore function to the injured fingers.

Upon returning home, the user examined the blender and observed that while the blade assembly appeared to remain threaded onto the cup, the cutter blade and silicone sealing gasket were tilted upward on one side, rather than sitting evenly. The user also noted that during the “Smoothie” preset’s operation, the blender repeatedly starts and stops while the personal blending cup rotates alternately in opposite directions. The user has questioned whether this operating sequence might have contributed to the detachment.

The user has preserved the blender and all its components, along with photographs of the injuries, photographs of the blender and blade assembly after the incident, security camera video capturing the incident, and medical records documenting the emergency treatment.

Safety Concerns

This incident highlights several serious safety concerns associated with blenders, particularly those equipped with personal blending cup attachments:

  • Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is severe lacerations from exposed, rapidly rotating blades. Such injuries can lead to significant blood loss, severed tendons, nerve damage, and bone damage. The force of a propelled blending cup could also cause blunt force trauma to the user or bystanders, potentially striking sensitive areas like the head or face. Splattering hot or frozen contents could also cause burns or eye injuries.
  • Long-Term Risks: Severe hand injuries can lead to long-term or permanent disability, including chronic pain, reduced dexterity, loss of grip strength, and impaired fine motor skills, necessitating extensive physical therapy or reconstructive surgery. The psychological trauma of such an incident can also be significant.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Anyone operating the blender is at direct risk. Bystanders, including children or pets, are also vulnerable to injuries from propelled components or exposed blades if the blender malfunctions.
  • Property Damage Potential: A detaching cup can cause food or liquid to be forcefully ejected, resulting in mess and potential damage to countertops, walls, flooring, and nearby electronics. The impact of the propelled cup itself could also cause physical damage to surfaces or objects.

The reported observation of the tilted blade assembly and the “start-stop-reverse” operation sequence during the “Smoothie” preset raise concerns about potential design flaws or manufacturing defects that could compromise the secure attachment of the blending cup and blade assembly.

What Consumers Should Do

Given the serious nature of this incident, consumers who own Oster Pro Series Blenders, especially models like the BLSTEPH or similar blenders with personal blending cup attachments, should take the following precautions:

  • Immediate Steps If an Incident Occurs: If you or someone you know has been injured by a blender malfunction, seek immediate medical attention. Preserve the product in its post-incident condition and document everything with photographs, videos, and detailed notes. Keep all medical records.
  • How to Check for Affected Product: Carefully check the model number of your Oster blender, particularly if it is an “Oster Pro Series Blender” that uses individual-sized blending cups. The model number is typically found on a label on the bottom of the blender base.
  • Prevention Measures:
  • Secure Assembly: Always ensure that all components, particularly the blade assembly, individual blending cups, and lids, are securely fastened and properly seated before operating the blender. Double-check all connections.
  • Supervision During Use: Do not leave the blender unattended while in operation. Remain near the appliance and be prepared to turn it off immediately if any unusual sounds, vibrations, or movements occur.
  • Avoid Overfilling: Do not overfill blending cups beyond the maximum fill line, as this can create excessive pressure.
  • Keep Hands Clear: Always keep hands, utensils, and other objects clear of the blending area during operation. Never attempt to remove or adjust parts while the motor is running.
  • Read the Manual: Familiarize yourself with the user manual for your specific blender model, paying close attention to assembly instructions, safety warnings, and recommended usage for all attachments.
  • Reporting Procedures: If you experience a similar incident or observe any concerning malfunctions with your Oster blender, report it immediately to Sunbeam Products, Inc. d/b/a Jarden Consumer Solutions and file a report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov.
