Incident Overview
On August 18, 2026, a consumer reported an incident involving a Pyrex glass storage container. According to the report, while eating food from the container, the individual unexpectedly bit into a piece of glass. Upon inspection, it was discovered that a shard of glass had chipped off from the lip of the container. Photos were reportedly submitted with the incident report, showing the chipped area on the container. This event raises serious questions about the durability and integrity of glass food storage products during normal use.
Safety Concerns
The presence of glass shards in food presents immediate and severe safety concerns:
- Immediate Dangers: Ingesting glass can cause immediate trauma to the mouth, throat, and esophagus, leading to cuts, lacerations, and internal bleeding. There is also a significant choking hazard, especially for children or individuals with difficulty chewing or swallowing.
- Long-Term Risks: Even small shards of glass can cause internal injuries to the stomach and intestines as they pass through the digestive system, potentially leading to perforations, severe pain, infection, and internal bleeding. These injuries may require emergency medical intervention, including surgery.
- Who Might Be Affected: Anyone using these glass containers is at risk, particularly those who may not meticulously inspect their dishes before each meal, such as busy parents, elderly individuals, or children. The incident can be accidental and unexpected, making it difficult to prevent unless the product defect is identified beforehand.
- Property Damage Potential: While the primary concern here is personal injury, chipped glass could also contaminate other food items stored or prepared nearby, rendering them unsafe for consumption.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who own Pyrex glass storage containers or similar glass bakeware should take the following precautions:
- Immediate Steps: If you have experienced a similar incident or suspect you may have ingested glass, seek immediate medical attention. Stop using the affected container and inspect all other similar glass containers you own.
- How to Check for Affected Products: Before each use, carefully inspect the rims, edges, and inner surfaces of your glass storage containers for any chips, cracks, or signs of damage. Pay close attention to the lip where the lid typically seals, as this area can be prone to wear or impacts.
- Prevention Measures:
- Always handle glass bakeware with care, avoiding impacts against hard surfaces like countertops or other dishes.
- Avoid sudden or extreme temperature changes (e.g., placing a hot dish on a cold, wet surface, or adding cold liquid to a very hot dish).
- Do not use glass bakeware on a stovetop, under a broiler, or over direct heat.
- Use only plastic or wooden utensils with glass bakeware to avoid scratching or chipping.
- Store glass containers carefully to prevent them from knocking against each other or other hard objects.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads that could scratch the glass surface.
- Reporting Procedures: If you experience an incident involving a product, report it immediately to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov. Also, contact the product’s manufacturer directly to inform them of the issue.
Manufacturer’s Response
World Kitchen, LLC, the manufacturer of Pyrex NA, provided a response on September 10, 2026, to the CPSC consumer report. The company stated that the consumer had not yet reached out to Corelle Brands (d/b/a World Kitchen) directly nor submitted the glassware for inspection.
Corelle Brands emphasized that without the opportunity to inspect the specific product involved, they are unable to determine whether it is indeed a Corelle Brands product or to assess any potential defect, common misuse, retailer mishandling, or other cause of the alleged failure. They noted that similar products from other entities are sometimes misidentified.
The manufacturer also stated that their glass bakeware is produced in compliance with applicable industry standards, specifically Chapter 24 of the Cookware Manufacturing Association Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware. Corelle Brands suggested that, in their experience, consumer misuse, failure to follow instructions, and retailer mishandling are the causes of the overwhelming majority of glass product failures industry-wide. Examples of such misuse provided include hitting the glass on a hard surface, using improper cleaning materials, using on a stovetop, placing a hot dish on a wet/cold surface, adding liquid to a hot dish, retailer mishandling, or using in a too-hot oven. Corelle Brands believes there is a chance either retailer or consumer misuse caused or contributed to the alleged product failure.
Corelle Brands’ Consumer Affairs Department can be reached at support@corellebrands.com or 1-800-999-3436 if the consumer wishes to submit the glassware for inspection.
