Pyrex Snap Ware Bowls Reported to Splinter, Causing Glass Shards and Safety Hazard

September 16, 2026

September 10, 2026 — A consumer has reported a serious safety issue involving Pyrex Snap Ware glass storage containers, leading to glass shards in cabinets and within the bowls themselves. The incident highlights concerns about the durability of the glass at the point where lids snap on, potentially creating a dangerous situation for users.

Incident Overview

The consumer, who purchased two boxes of Pyrex Snap Ware from Costco in March and June 2026, began noticing glass shards appearing in their kitchen cabinets. Initially, they attributed this to accidental impacts between bowls. However, the situation escalated when glass fragments were discovered inside empty Pyrex bowls.

Upon closer inspection, it was revealed that the sections of the bowls designed for the lids to snap onto were damaged. This prompted an immediate review of all the consumer’s Pyrex Snap Ware, resulting in the discovery that a total of 12 bowls exhibited similar damage. The consumer promptly notified Pyrex, providing photographic evidence of the fractured bowls. Their primary concern is that the snap-on lid feature itself might be causing the glass to splinter, leading to a hazardous environment. All affected Snap Ware has since been removed from use.

Safety Concerns

The reported splintering of Pyrex Snap Ware bowls poses significant safety risks:

  • Immediate Dangers: The presence of glass shards in cabinets and directly within food storage containers presents an immediate danger of cuts and lacerations during handling. More critically, if these shards go unnoticed, they could contaminate food, leading to severe internal injuries if ingested.
  • Long-Term Risks: Even small, unnoticed cracks or chips can weaken the glass, potentially leading to sudden and unexpected breakage during normal use. This creates an ongoing hazard in the kitchen environment.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Anyone handling or using these bowls is at risk. Children, in particular, are vulnerable if they come into contact with fragmented glass or if shards contaminate their food. Pets could also be at risk if glass fragments fall onto the floor.
  • Property Damage Potential: Beyond personal injury, sudden shattering could damage other items in cabinets or on countertops, leading to additional financial losses.

What Consumers Should Do

Given the serious nature of this incident, consumers who own Pyrex Snap Ware bowls should take immediate action:

  • Immediate Steps: If you own Pyrex Snap Ware with model numbers 7702R, 8201R, 8602, 7211, or 8704, immediately stop using them.
  • How to Check: Carefully inspect all your Pyrex Snap Ware bowls, paying close attention to the rim and the areas where the lids snap on. Look for any chips, cracks, rough edges, or missing pieces of glass. Use extreme caution during inspection to avoid cuts.
  • Prevention Measures: Until the issue is fully understood, consider discontinuing use of any Pyrex Snap Ware that exhibits signs of damage.
  • Reporting Procedures: If you experience a similar incident, report it immediately to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov. You should also contact Corelle Brands (World Kitchen, LLC) directly.

Manufacturer’s Response

Corelle Brands d/b/a World Kitchen, LLC, the manufacturer of Pyrex products, provided a response to the CPSC consumer report on September 14, 2026. They stated that they have contacted the consumer to resolve the issue.

Corelle Brands asserted that their glass bakeware is manufactured in compliance with Chapter 24 of the Cookware Manufacturing Association Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware. Furthermore, the manufacturer suggested that “consumer misuse, failure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and supplier and/or retailer mishandling are the causes of the overwhelming majority of glass product failures industry-wide.” They provided examples of potential misuse, including hitting the glass on a hard surface, using improper cleaning materials, using on a stovetop, placing a hot dish on a wet or cold surface, adding liquid to a hot dish, using in a too-hot oven, or retailer mishandling like improper stacking or storage. Corelle Brands believes there is a chance that either retailer or consumer misuse caused or contributed to the alleged failure of the product.

Corelle Brands has verified the accuracy of its comments and requested their publication in the CPSC database. Consumers wishing to reach out to Corelle Brands can contact their Consumer Affairs Department at support@corellebrands.com or 1-800-999-3436.
