The incident highlights potential safety risks associated with glass bakeware and storage products.

Product Details

Brand Name: Pyrex Snapware
Manufacturer: World Kitchen, LLC (Corelle Brands d/b/a World Kitchen)
Retailer: Costco
Incident Report Number: 20251217-2AE83-2147325459

Incident Overview

On December 17, 2025, a consumer reported an incident involving their Pyrex Snapware 7×7 clear glass container. According to the report, upon opening the container, the rim unexpectedly sharded. The consumer discovered glass fragments mixed with boiled eggs that were stored inside the container, rendering the food unsafe for consumption. The incident occurred without apparent misuse or impact, raising questions about the durability and integrity of the product’s design or material.

Safety Concerns

The sharding of glass containers, as described in this incident, presents severe safety concerns:

  • Immediate Dangers: The primary and most immediate danger is the ingestion of glass shards. Consuming even tiny fragments of glass can cause serious internal injuries, including cuts and punctures to the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, and intestines. Such injuries can lead to severe pain, bleeding, infection, and may require emergency medical intervention, including surgery.
  • Long-Term Risks: While not immediately apparent, undetected internal injuries from glass ingestion could lead to chronic issues, scarring, or complications over time.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Anyone using these glass storage containers, especially those preparing or consuming food from them, is at risk. Children, the elderly, or individuals with difficulty chewing or swallowing may be particularly vulnerable to severe harm from ingesting glass.
  • Property Damage Potential: Beyond the direct harm to individuals, the incident resulted in the loss of contaminated food, representing a financial loss and inconvenience for the consumer.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who own Pyrex Snapware glass containers should take the following precautions:

  • Inspect Your Products: Carefully examine the rims and surfaces of all your Pyrex Snapware glass containers for any signs of chips, cracks, or imperfections before and after each use. Pay close attention to the edges and any areas that may come into contact with the lid.
  • Discontinue Use if Damaged: If you find any damage, no matter how minor, immediately stop using the container and dispose of it safely to prevent potential injury.
  • Handle with Care: Always handle glass bakeware and storage containers with care. Avoid sudden temperature changes, do not place hot glass on wet or cold surfaces, and protect them from impacts against hard surfaces.
  • Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Adhere to all usage and care instructions provided by the manufacturer.
  • Report Incidents: If you experience a similar incident, report it to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.SaferProducts.gov and notify the manufacturer directly.

Manufacturer’s Response

Corelle Brands d/b/a World Kitchen, the manufacturer, responded to the incident report on January 5, 2026. The manufacturer confirmed contact with the customer and offered a replacement product, as well as referring them to Costco for a refund.

However, Corelle Brands noted that the consumer has not submitted the glassware for inspection. Without the opportunity to inspect the container, the company states it is unable to verify if the product is indeed a Corelle Brands product or to determine the specific cause of the alleged failure. They suggest that factors such as common misuse, retailer mishandling, or other causes could contribute to such incidents.

Corelle Brands highlighted that their glass bakeware is manufactured in compliance with applicable industry standards, specifically Chapter 24 of the Cookware Manufacturing Association Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware. The company also stated its experience suggests that consumer misuse (e.g., hitting the glass, improper cleaning, using on a stovetop, placing hot on cold surfaces, adding liquid to a hot dish, or using in a too-hot oven) or retailer mishandling (e.g., improper stacking or storage) are often the causes of the majority of glass product failures industry-wide. They believe there is a chance that either retailer or consumer misuse caused or contributed to the alleged failure of the product in this instance.
