Pyrex Snapware Glass Containers Chipping, Posing Glass Shard Contamination Risk

September 16, 2026

September 8, 2026 — A recent incident report details concerns over Pyrex Snapware glass storage containers, sold at Costco, which reportedly began chipping along internal edges during normal use. The chipping poses a significant risk of food contamination with glass shards, although no injuries have been reported at the time the product was returned.

Product Details

Brand Name: Pyrex

Incident Overview

The incident report, dated August 18, 2026, describes issues with a Pyrex Snapware set purchased from Costco as recently as March 2026. According to the consumer, the glass containers exhibited chipping along their internal edges following what was described as normal use. This defect led to the risk of glass shards contaminating food stored within the containers. Fortunately, the consumer reported no injuries occurred before the products were returned. The consumer did not initially reach out to the manufacturer directly.

Safety Concerns

The chipping of glass containers, particularly along internal edges where food comes into contact, presents serious safety concerns for consumers:

  • Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is the potential ingestion of glass shards. Swallowing glass can cause severe internal cuts, lacerations to the mouth, throat, and digestive tract, and internal bleeding. There is also a risk of choking, especially for children or the elderly.
  • Long-Term Risks: While no injuries were reported in this specific incident, repeated exposure to products with such defects could lead to chronic gastrointestinal issues if small shards are ingested over time. Internal injuries might not be immediately apparent and could lead to serious medical complications if left untreated.
  • Who Might Be Affected: Anyone using these containers is at risk. However, infants, young children, and the elderly may be particularly vulnerable due to their inability to detect small glass fragments or their more fragile digestive systems. Individuals with compromised immune systems or those who have undergone digestive surgeries may also face heightened risks.
  • Property Damage Potential: The most direct property damage is the contamination of food, rendering it unsafe for consumption and requiring disposal. This can lead to financial loss for consumers and food waste.

What Consumers Should Do

Consumers who own Pyrex Snapware glass containers, especially those purchased from Costco around March 2026, should take immediate action:

  • Immediately Stop Use: Discontinue using any Pyrex Snapware glass containers that show signs of chipping, cracking, or damage, particularly along the internal edges.
  • Inspect Your Products: Carefully inspect all Pyrex Snapware glass containers in your possession for any signs of chipping, cracks, or imperfections, especially around the rim, edges, and internal surfaces.
  • Do Not Attempt Repairs: Do not attempt to repair chipped or damaged glass containers, as this can worsen the problem and further compromise safety.
  • Retain Evidence: If you discover a similar issue, retain the product and any related documentation (receipts, packaging) as potential evidence.
  • Contact the Retailer/Manufacturer: Reach out to Costco for information on returns or refunds. Contact World Kitchen, LLC (Corelle Brands) directly at support@corellebrands.com or 1-800-999-3436 to report the incident and inquire about replacement or refund options.
  • Report to CPSC: Report any incidents involving chipping or other defects with glass containers to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov. Your report helps identify patterns and prompt necessary safety actions.

Manufacturer’s Response

World Kitchen, LLC, the manufacturer doing business as Corelle Brands, provided a detailed response on September 4, 2026, regarding the incident report. Corelle Brands stated that they had not had the opportunity to inspect the specific product involved in the claim, making it difficult to verify if it is indeed a Corelle Brands product or to determine the cause of the failure. They noted that consumers often misidentify products from other manufacturers as Corelle Brands.

The manufacturer emphasized that their glass bakeware is produced in compliance with applicable industry standards, specifically Chapter 24 of the Cookware Manufacturing Association Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware. Corelle Brands suggested that, in their experience, consumer misuse, failure to follow instructions, or retailer mishandling are the causes of a majority of glass product failures across the industry. They provided examples of potential misuse, including hitting the glass on hard surfaces, using improper cleaning materials or utensils, using on a stovetop, placing a hot dish on a wet or cold surface, adding liquid to a hot dish, or using in a too-hot oven. The manufacturer believes there is a chance that retailer or consumer misuse contributed to the alleged product failure. Corelle Brands encouraged the consumer to contact their Consumer Affairs Department for further assistance and product inspection.
