Incident Overview
On August 19, 2026, a consumer reported an alarming incident involving Pyrex Snapware glass food storage containers. According to the report, upon opening the lid of a Snapware/Pyrex container, a shard of glass fell directly into the food. Unaware of the glass, the consumer ate some of the food before noticing a foreign object. Fortunately, the foreign sensation prompted the consumer to remove it from their mouth, at which point it was discovered to be a piece of glass.
The consumer stated that others have reportedly experienced similar incidents, with glass shards breaking off from the same product, specifically those purchased at Costco. Following this dangerous discovery, the consumer alerted both the manufacturer, World Kitchen, LLC, and the retailer, Costco, about the potential hazard. At the time of the initial report, the consumer had not received a response from the manufacturer.
Safety Concerns
This incident raises significant safety concerns regarding the integrity of Pyrex Snapware products and the potential for serious consumer harm.
- Immediate Dangers: The primary immediate danger is the ingestion of glass shards. Swallowing glass can cause severe internal injuries, including cuts, punctures, and lacerations to the mouth, throat, esophagus, stomach, and intestines. This can lead to acute pain, bleeding, and potentially life-threatening complications requiring immediate medical intervention. There is also a choking hazard, particularly for children or individuals who may not discern foreign objects in their food easily.
- Long-Term Risks: Even if immediate symptoms are not severe, ingested glass can cause delayed internal bleeding, infection, or scarring as it passes through the digestive tract. The long-term effects of such an injury could include chronic digestive issues or internal scar tissue.
- Who Might Be Affected: Anyone using these containers is at risk, but children, the elderly, or individuals with sensory impairments may be particularly vulnerable as they might be less likely to detect glass shards before ingestion.
- Property Damage Potential: While the primary concern here is personal injury, if the glass container shatters, it could also cause damage to surfaces or other items in the vicinity.
What Consumers Should Do
Given the reported incident and similar concerns, consumers who own Pyrex Snapware products should take the following precautions:
- Immediately Inspect Your Products: Carefully examine all your Pyrex Snapware containers, especially around the rim and lid area, for any chips, cracks, or signs of wear that could indicate a weakened structure or potential for glass to detach. Pay close attention to sets purchased from Costco.
- Handle with Care: Always handle glass bakeware and containers carefully. Avoid sudden impacts against hard surfaces, extreme temperature changes (e.g., placing a hot dish on a cold, wet counter or adding cold liquid to a hot dish), or using abrasive cleaning materials that could scratch or weaken the glass.
- Exercise Caution When Opening Lids: Be vigilant when opening lids on these containers. Visually inspect your food for any foreign objects before consumption.
- Discontinue Use if Damaged: If you find any damage, chips, or cracks on your Pyrex Snapware containers, discontinue use immediately and dispose of the product safely.
- Report Incidents: If you experience a similar incident or find glass shards in your Pyrex Snapware products, report it immediately to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.saferproducts.gov.
- Contact the Manufacturer: Reach out directly to World Kitchen, LLC (Corelle Brands) to report your experience and inquire about potential remedies or safety information.
Manufacturer’s Response
On September 4, 2026, World Kitchen, LLC, operating as Corelle Brands, provided a response regarding incident report ID: 20260819-7CEF4-2147312184. Corelle Brands stated that it does not appear the consumer had reached out to them directly and that the glassware had not been submitted for inspection.
Corelle Brands emphasized that without the opportunity to inspect the product, they are unable to determine if the item is, in fact, a Corelle Brands product, as similar products by other manufacturers are sometimes misidentified. Furthermore, without inspection, they cannot assess any potential defect, common misuse, retailer mishandling, or other causes of failure.
The company affirmed that its glass bakeware is manufactured in compliance with Chapter 24 of the Cookware Manufacturing Association Engineering Standards for Cookware and Bakeware. Corelle Brands also noted that, in their experience, consumer misuse, failure to follow instructions, and supplier/retailer mishandling are the causes of the majority of glass product failures industry-wide. Examples provided include hitting the glass on a hard surface, using improper cleaning materials, stovetop use, placing a hot dish on a wet/cold surface, adding liquid to a hot dish, retailer improper stacking, or using in a too-hot oven. They believe there’s a chance either retailer or consumer misuse contributed to the alleged failure.
Corelle Brands invited the consumer to contact their Consumer Affairs Department at support@corellebrands.com or 1-800-999-3436 if they wish to submit the glassware for inspection.
