Incident Overview
On December 7, 2025, an incident was reported concerning RayChy Raychyc40 light-up shoes. The shoes were purchased for a child by a family member. After the child wore the shoes home and on one other occasion, a parent noticed that the insert was missing from one shoe. Upon closer inspection, it was determined that the insert, which should have secured the shoe’s internal components, was likely never properly attached during manufacturing.
Unlike the other shoe, where the lining and bottom were securely glued, the problem shoe’s thin fabric lining on the bottom could be easily pulled back. This exposed a button battery and the lights of the shoe, which were intended to be permanently encased. Fortunately, the child only wore the shoes twice for short periods, away from water, and they were stored out of reach when not in use. No injury or ingestion occurred in this instance, preventing a potentially severe incident. The manufacturer has acknowledged the incident.
Safety Concerns
The exposed button battery and internal wiring within the RayChy Raychyc40 shoes present several severe safety hazards, primarily to young children:
- Button Battery Ingestion Hazard: Button batteries are extremely dangerous if swallowed. When ingested, especially by children, they can get lodged in the esophagus, causing chemical reactions that lead to severe internal burns, tissue damage, perforation, and even death within hours. Even if removed, long-term complications can include scarring, esophageal strictures, and feeding difficulties.
- Choking Hazard: The button battery itself, or other small components like the thin fabric lining or parts of the lighting mechanism, could easily detach and become a choking hazard for young children.
- Chemical Burn Risk: If the exposed button battery is damaged or tampered with, it could leak corrosive chemicals, leading to skin irritation or chemical burns upon contact.
- Electrical Shock/Burn Risk: With the internal wiring and lights exposed, there is a potential risk of electrical shock or minor burns, particularly if the shoe comes into contact with water or if a child attempts to manipulate the exposed components.
- Lack of Durability/Premature Wear: The faulty construction indicates a potential lack of product integrity, which could lead to other components detaching or malfunctioning, creating further unforeseen hazards.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who own RayChy Raychyc40 light-up shoes should take immediate action to ensure their children’s safety:
- Immediately Stop Use: Prevent children from wearing these shoes.
- Inspect All Shoes: Carefully check both shoes for any signs of loose inserts, exposed internal components, particularly button batteries, wiring, or lights. Do not assume if one shoe appears fine, the other is safe.
- Secure and Store Safely: If you identify a defect, immediately remove the shoes from your child’s reach and secure any loose components, especially button batteries.
- Proper Disposal: If the product is found to be defective and exposes a button battery, consider the product unsafe. Securely remove the button battery (if it’s accessible and you can do so safely without damaging it further) and dispose of both the battery and the shoes according to local hazardous waste guidelines, or contact the retailer/manufacturer for disposal instructions. Do not simply throw them in household trash where children or pets could access them.
- Report the Incident: File a report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.SaferProducts.gov and notify the manufacturer directly. Your report helps identify hazardous products and prompts potential recalls.
- Seek Medical Attention: If you suspect a child has swallowed a button battery or any other small part, seek immediate emergency medical care. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
Manufacturer’s Response
