TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Bed Linked to Severe Allergic Reactions and VOC Off-Gassing Concerns

June 12, 2026 — A consumer has reported suffering severe, systemic allergic reactions and physical distress, including full-body hives, respiratory issues, headaches, nausea, and dizziness, allegedly due to a new TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Bed. Incident Overview

The consumer purchased a premium TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Bed on April 23, 2026, which was delivered and installed on May 13, 2026. Within nights of sleeping on the new mattress system, the consumer began to experience a severe systemic physical reaction. Symptoms included head-to-toe hives, intense skin irritation, sneezing, nasal congestion, a sore throat, headaches, nausea, and dizziness. These symptoms persisted and intensified over several days.

In an attempt to identify the cause, the consumer switched from new bamboo sheets to old, washed cotton sheets between May 21-22, 2026. Paradoxically, this change exacerbated the symptoms, leading to a violent spread of hives and rashes across their entire face and body. The consumer posits that the more breathable cotton sheets allowed a higher concentration of the mattress’s chemical vapors and foam particulates to come into direct contact with their skin.

As of the incident report date, the consumer has been completely displaced from their bedroom, experiencing intense physical pain, discomfort, and distress, awaiting the resolution of the severe systemic reaction. The retailer, Mueller Furniture, has reportedly issued a full refund for the $11,000 purchase, acknowledging the consumer’s distress. However, the consumer directly implicates Tempur-Pedic for manufacturing an unsafe product and failing to adequately warn consumers about potential severe chemical sensitivities and VOC off-gassing risks associated with their specialized memory foams and electronic components.

Safety Concerns

This incident highlights several significant safety concerns for consumers:

  • Immediate Dangers: Acute exposure to high levels of VOCs or specific chemical sensitizers can trigger immediate and severe allergic reactions, respiratory distress (sneezing, congestion, sore throat), skin irritation (hives, rashes), and neurological symptoms (headaches, nausea, dizziness). Such reactions can be debilitating and require immediate medical attention.
  • Long-term Risks: Repeated or prolonged exposure, especially for individuals who develop sensitivities, could lead to chronic health issues, including persistent respiratory problems, dermatological conditions, and chemical sensitivities that may affect reactions to other products or environments. The development of new allergies or worsening of existing conditions is a serious concern.
  • Vulnerable Populations: Individuals with pre-existing allergies, asthma, chemical sensitivities (e.g., Multiple Chemical Sensitivity), or compromised immune systems may be at higher risk of experiencing adverse reactions. Children, the elderly, and pregnant individuals may also be more vulnerable to chemical exposures.
  • Property Damage Potential: While no direct property damage was reported in this specific incident, the presence of strong off-gassing or chemical release from a product could potentially lead to the contamination or degradation of surrounding materials or necessitate costly cleaning and remediation of the living space, beyond just the product itself. The consumer’s displacement from their bedroom illustrates a loss of use of property.
  • Undisclosed Risks: The consumer alleges a failure to warn about potential severe health risks associated with the product’s materials and off-gassing. This lack of transparency can leave consumers unprepared for adverse reactions, especially with high-value, “luxury” products where higher safety expectations are often assumed.

What Consumers Should Do

If you own a TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Bed or a similar memory foam mattress and experience any adverse health effects:

  • Discontinue Use Immediately: If you suspect your mattress is causing symptoms, stop using it and remove it from your living space if possible.
  • Ventilate Your Home: Open windows and doors to increase air circulation in affected areas, which may help dissipate VOCs.
  • Seek Medical Attention: Consult a healthcare professional immediately if you experience severe allergic reactions, respiratory distress, or other persistent symptoms. Document your symptoms and their timeline.
  • Identify Your Product: Check your purchase records or the product’s tags to confirm if you own the TEMPUR-Ergo ProSmart Air Bed or a similar model from Tempur-Pedic.
  • Research Product Certifications: While the manufacturer mentions CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD certifications, consumers with sensitivities may need to conduct further personal research and consider their individual reactions, as even certified low-VOC products can still trigger reactions in highly sensitive individuals.
  • Report the Incident: File a detailed report with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at www.cpsc.gov, especially if you have experienced similar adverse health effects. This helps CPSC gather data and identify potential hazards.
  • Keep Documentation: Retain all purchase receipts, product information, communication with the retailer and manufacturer, and medical records related to your symptoms.

Manufacturer’s Response

Tempur Sealy, the manufacturer, formally acknowledged the incident report on June 4, 2026. While expressing concern for the consumer’s reported experience and stating they take product safety seriously, the manufacturer denies that the information currently available establishes the product as unsafe or that it caused the reported symptoms.

Tempur Sealy asserts that all Tempur-Pedic products are designed and manufactured to meet or exceed federal, state, and local safety requirements, including California Proposition 65 and California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards. They also state that their products undergo internal and third-party safety testing. The manufacturer specifically notes that Tempur-Pedic mattresses and pillows “do not contain VOCs at levels that pose a health risk to consumers,” meet applicable regulatory standards, and, though not legally required, meet CARB standards and GREENGUARD Certification requirements for low VOC emissions. They also highlight that all foams used are CertiPUR-US® certified.

Regarding VOC and odor concerns, Tempur Sealy explains that their products may have a temporary “new product” odor, common with polyurethane foam products. They state that any such odor consists of substances in very small amounts, below levels of safety concern, including California Proposition 65 and CARB requirements. At this time, Tempur Sealy indicates they have not identified information suggesting a product defect, warning deficiency, or unreasonable risk related to VOC off-gassing, chemical components, or electronic components. They reaffirm their commitment to consumer safety, product stewardship, and cooperation with CPSC.
