Clarks Cloudsteppers Canvas Slip-Ons Breeze Step - Navy Daisy, 8 wide
Case Details
A 71-year-old woman developed a severe infection after wearing Clarks Cloudsteppers Canvas Slip-Ons Breeze Step in the Navy Daisy color. The infection was caused by contact dermatitis, triggered by exposure to benzidine-based dyes, a well-documented carcinogen and irritant.
The consumer, who had diabetes and other health conditions, suffered an outbreak on her foot, which progressed into a severe infection. She underwent multiple toe amputations, followed by a lower leg amputation. Despite extensive medical treatment, she ultimately died of sepsis on February 5, 2023.
This case raises serious concerns about the safety of chemicals used in footwear manufacturing and the responsibility of brands like Clarks to ensure their products are safe for consumers.
Injury Brief

- Common risks of toxic dyes in footwear include:
- Skin irritation and allergic reactions
- Severe infections in individuals with diabetes or weakened immune systems
- Long-term exposure risks, including carcinogenic effects
Despite medical and scientific evidence linking benzidine dyes to serious health issues, some manufacturers continue to use these chemicals in consumer products.

If you purchased this product, be aware of potential health risks and discontinue use immediately if you experience skin irritation or allergic reactions.
Liability
Companies like C & J Clark America Inc., the manufacturer of these shoes, have a legal obligation to:

- Disclose potential risks associated with hazardous chemicals.
- Ensure their products meet safety regulations to prevent harm.
Failure to do so endangers consumers and may make manufacturers liable for injuries and deaths caused by their products.
